Gov. Newsom is expected to sign it.

I am very happy this is being addressed more aggressively.

"Something for nothing" philosophy.

Landlords will shift non-rent costs to renters.

No paid utilities, no more paid trash pickup, no free parking ….

Yep. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

More bad government decisions to try and rectify previous bad government decisions.
How anyone believes there is "freedom" in this country is beyond me.
Government can and will tell everyone what they're allowed to do with their own private property just to get votes from entitled voters. We are a sad and weak collective population.

As with all rent control, great for people that already have housing. Terrible for people who are trying to get it.

What about the people who want to live there, but who aren't rich?

I am trying to relocate to Seattle, and would be in a similar situation.

Also, we need to completely revolutionize urban development.

Good luck with that. You will probably be better off locating 30 miles north of south of it. Unless maybe the more dicey areas like Rainier Valley or White Center are more affordable.

Still easier than waiting for major social changes to occur in the red states.

They're taking a cue from the airline industry -- no free meals, no free baggage check-in ... one airline even experimented with pay toilets!

That's exactly who rent control hurts the most. Rent control applies to existing housing as it is raise based. Since rent control cuts into profits from existing housing that hurts financing for new housing development. New housing is not subject to rent control so to make up for it higher rents are charged, and since there is less new housing and the demand is sky high people will pay them.

So if you have a rent controlled apartment great. Your rent will not go up as much as the market dictates, and will take years for ownership neglect of the property to take effect. If you don't have a rent controlled apartment, good luck finding one.

You aren't entitled to live any where you wish.
That's just life.
The little kids making your shoes probably want to live in Seattle too but also can't afford it.

Portland tried something like this and they ended up getting sued by landlords. I know the city's intention is to cut down on the homeless problem but on the downside, when you have rent control, it weakens the maintenance on the building due to lack of income from rent. I have seen what happens to apartments when rent is cheap, lot of things don't work and things get neglected and problems are ignored. But there is a difference between raising rent because of increase in costs and money inflation and just jacking up the rent just because you know there are people willing to pay that much and they tend to raise it very high than raising it by 50 bucks or 100.

Instead what Portland did was made new laws about how much rent you can raise up from your current charged rent and also how soon you have to give out a notice to your tenants for rent increase and how much time you can give them before you can evict them.

But how can you live in those places without being rich?

At least Washington state isn't:

—pushing “heartbeat” abortion laws
—pushing “bathroom laws”
—allowing the Bible to be taught in public schools
—using the “War on Drugs” as an excuse to disenfranchise people of color

Meanwhile, Texas is doing nothing to combat climate change. Just a little over 2 years ago, most of Houston was under water, yet people were more worried about being "raped by Mexicans" than rising seas.

Washington is making great strides to address it. It was the centerpoint of Inslee's presidential campaign.

Texas is doing nothing on gun control, despite a racially motivated mass shooting. When was the last time Seattle had a mass shooting?

Washington had made great strides to protect the LGBT community. The day of the Orlando shooting, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick tweeted a bible verse that was tantamount to saying "they had it coming".

Easy; you just forget about living in those places and live someplace you can afford.
People arent entitled to whatever they want, only what they can afford.
What if you did get to move to Seattle and one day just enough people there got fed up with the democrats and the balance shifted just enough to make the entire state RED??

I've lived in both blue and red states and neither has much discernible effect on anyone's day to day life.

Seattle is trying to pass umpteen taxes. Even tax people for using the street. Registering a car in Washington is around $350-$500. The list goes on. Yay blue.

How do people get to live in houses in those cities? Average home prices in the Bay Area are over $1 mil, and over $700,000 in Seattle. I don’t even want to know how expensive NYC is.

(For comparison, the average home price in Houston is ~$300,000)
