He was on hour-long TV shows for years, millions of people got to know him and understand that he is a fighter, he goes after what he wants, he does not back down or accept defeat.
His father raised/conditioned him that way.
Political analysts predicted his reaction DURING the campaign!

Too bad he comes across as a third-rate Mafia capo trying to hold on to his territory -- all suit and no muscle.

Behaving like this has gotten him what he wants for 20-30 years.
It has always worked for him, he genuinely expects it to work now.
This is exactly what the political commentators said would happen, during the campaign.
They knew how his mind works; frankly, I thought they were being unrealistic and letting their dislike of him do their talking.
They were right.
I was wrong.

Do conservatives have any hope of retaking their party from the fascists, or are they happy to let this happen?

There seems to be an ideological split occurring within the GOP -- the "Old Guard" that still believes in separation of Church and State, and the "New Guard" for whom their Church IS the State.

I honestly don't think they're exactly happy with it. They fanned the flames of conspiracy theories and nationalism to get themselves elected, but now the fire is raging beyond their ability to control.

Conspiracy theorist Republicans hold seats in congress. A spray-tanned, juvenile conman is the Republican base's new darling. Offending people for its own sake is more important than policy. Facts are optional.

It seems like the GOP establishment and moderate Republicans will have to wait for this loony fire to burn itself out. At this rate it looks like they'll have to wait a while. Who knows what the party will look like in the years to come. The crazy isn't going to go away overnight...

Because Trump has a very outspoken personality which comes with a lot of frankness and no filter.

The same thing could be said about the local town drunk.

But that's giving him too much credit. It's not that he doesn't have a filter, it's more a matter of him having no respect for the existence of truth and facts. He'll say any lie if he believes it'll get him the desired result. Frankness implies speaking the truth, whereas Trump has long ago disregarded reliance on the truth.

Trump is focused on WINNING.

Do winners give up?

"There are two types of people, which will you be, a loser like THEM, or a winner like ME".

Well, he can focus on winning all he wants. It still won't change the election results.
