Whistleblower featured in USA TODAY 'Behind the Blue Wall' series ousted from police union, by Daphne Duret, USA Today, Nov. 12, 2021.

As paraphrased in this Twitter thread by Ford Fischer:

Quote:
An Illinois police union unanimously voted to oust an officer after he received criminal charges for a video of cops slapping and cursing a handcuffed man dying of drug overdose.

The officer is the one who released the video, not an officer in the video.

Sgt. Javier Esqueda, a 27-year veteran of the Joliet Police Department, faces 20 years in prison for *revealing* that his fellow officers “slapped Eric Lurry, restricted his airway and shoved a baton in his mouth hours before his death.”

The cops in his union expelled Esqueda for “reprehensible” conduct 35-1, and he’s charged with official misconduct (20 years prison), for *revealing* that an officer slapped a dying man and called him “a b***h.”

The slapper cop caught a 6-day suspension.

One commenter, Flint Stone, wrote:

Quote:
This is what separates the brotherhood of police from all other unions. Any other union would never turn its back on a whistleblower.

Stuff like this is why there is such strong anti-police sentiment these days.

I still think "de-fund the police" is a lousy slogan. So is "abolish the police." Alas, police, or something like them, are needed in any complex civilization like ours.

At the same time, it's clear that "police reform" is inadequate -- we need more than just a few minor reforms. Maybe "overhaul the police"? Or perhaps "replace the police" or "reorganize the police"?

"Overhaul the police" sounds good to me.

I think the police should police and social workers should do the social work. My understanding is that is the true but obfuscated meaning intended by "defund the police."

agrees with the Overhaul the Police idea . But am of the opinion that people whom are whistleblowers are the truley brave people .. And should be held up as examples of how people in authority over others should behave in real life . and the other officers should be charged with conspiracsy .For involvement in the death . imho .

Well, they're certainly not going to win many friends this way. (Except with the ones paying union dues.)

I keep telling people that public sector unions should never have been allowed, even FDR called them an abomination in his own words, but liberals love them some unions and conservatives love them some cops (thought that is changing), so they just keep on keeping on like this.
