Many asteroids are rich in iron ore.

If we avoid nuking ourselves we may start to colonize space. Build cities on the moon, or cities that float in space itself. It would be cheaper to get the materials from asteroids than to ship the pig iron up from the earth.

And if we get successful at this mega engineering we ...may start to run out of near earth asteroids. So future generations may lament that "we didnt conserve our near earth asteroids when we had the chance" in the same way we fear near earth asteroids now.

Metallic asteroids are more rare than stony asteroids and carbon-based asteroids.

Engineers drew up plans for space colonies housing thousands back in the Seventies. Read Gerard O'Neil's "the High Frontier".

Not that big a deal.

I forgot... we would also use up the carbon based asteroids to make fuel, nonotubes, etc. Like fossil fuels on earth (not to export to earth but to build these space colonies). And maybe the rocky ones will get hallowed out to make into space colonies.

Like I said there is a whole damned thick book that explains all of that entitled "the High Frontier" by Gerard O'Neil.

These cities would be cylinder shaped and would slowly spin thereby creating artificial gravity through centripdal force. You would walk around on the inner surfaces of the cylinders. Interesting byproduct would be the central axis of each cylinder would have wieghtlessness so you could have new sports- like real life Quibbach (or whatever that thing that they do at Hogworts is called).
