Australia will ‘stand up’ to Chinese ‘bullies’: Defence Minister Peter Dutton

Defence Minister Peter Dutton declared Australia will “stand up” to Chinese bullying after propaganda figures warned of a “heavy attack” if ADF troops were sent to defend Taiwan.

Australia will not bow to Chinese bullying Defence Minister Peter Dutton has confirmed after the Global Times editor-in-chief issued a stark warning against entering a future war over Taiwan.

The editor-in-chief of China’s propaganda mouthpiece The Global Times declared on Monday Australian troops would face a “nightmare” if they confronted the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Hu Xijin posted a string of threatening tweets over the past week claiming Australian intervention in a war between China and Taiwan would trigger a serious backlash from China.

Responding to the threat in a radio interview on Thursday Mr Dutton said there were “lots of worrying signs” coming from China.

Peter Dutton has hit back at the Chinese government after the Communist Party’s foreign affairs spokesman publicly insulted the Defence Minister, labelling him as a reckless agitator.

China’s Foreign Affairs Zhao Lijian slammed Mr Dutton on Monday, saying he was “driven by selfish political games”.

“As a senior official of the Australian government, (Mr Dutton) is obsessed with the Cold War mentality and ideological prejudices,” Mr Zhao said.

“He has repeatedly made provocations, sensational and astonishing statements on China-related issues.”

When question about Mr Zhao’s harsh words on Tuesday, Mr Dutton told Sky News the statement was just another attempt at political spin from the Chinese government.

“This is the propaganda of the Communist Party,” Mr Dutton said.
