A North Korean student who smuggled copies of Squid Game into the country and sold them will reportedly be executed by firing squad.
North Korean authorities caught seven high school students watching the violent drama after sharing the show via USB flash drives.
The punishment was extended to the students’ school where teachers and school administrators were fired and faced banishment to work in remote mines.

The response from Pyongyang seems to suggest the hit Netflix series is reflects the North Koreans and Chinese internment camps where inmates wake up not knowing if they will be freed, alive, shot, tortured or have their organs harvested.

I am not a murderer, and if anyone says that I am one I will KILL them!

NK citizens don't need to watch something like Squid Games. They can get the same experience from watching the local news and living in NK.

The outwardly similar American "Hunger Games" franchise, I would bet, is readily available in China.

But this South Korean thing -with references to things like organ harvesting of prisoners (Which China has been alleged to really do to political prisoners) is probably too close for comfort to reality for Beijing to allow its people to see.

What sort of games do squids play? Tennis?

What is or are squid games? I have only heard the term recently which is why it is new to me.

People throwing squids at each other? Squids playing a game of touch or hide and seek? Monopoly?

And why are people getting killed for playing them?

Damn! apparantly its all the RAGE in China!

But Beijing doesnt officially allow it, but apparently they dont crack down on you for consuming it, nor for talking about it on Twitter nor for eating squid games confections from that bakery.

maybe the same as porn in China, illegal but not subject to any serious punishment.

The funny thing I get from that article is that its caused anger between China and South Korea (the source of the TV series), but for an ironic reason.

Or to me its ironic. I might be missing something.


This TV franchise looks to me like a thinly veiled parody of authoritarian Asian regimes (like both the Norks and the PPR), and it is perhaps the most subversive piece of pro democracy propaganda that you could hope to smuggle into China. So China blocks it from official broadcasts and streaming services, but allows it to come via the underground.

And this angers the South Korean ambassador, not because China is censoring it by blocking the show on the high roads, but because China is allowing its people to WATCH it via the low roads, but to watch it without PAYING South Korea for it!



The reason that that strikes me as funny is ...imagine the old Cold War era Voice of America broadcasts into the Iron Curtain countries of Europe and into the USSR. Imagine if Voice of America were to DEMAND that the Soviets PAY Voice of America for its services of flooding the USSR with anti Soviet propaganda!

I get it that the South Korean producers are being denied money from the huge Chinese market, but....

Seems to me that Seoul ought to just shut up, and allow Beijing to hang itself by allowing Bejing's subjects to watch this exported lampoon of the Bejing regime for free.
