‘Would just be the beginning’: Shadow treasurer Angus Taylor warns against potential changes to superannuation

The Opposition has warned that proposed changes to the superannuation scheme would “just be the beginning”, as Labor is accused of breaking another election promise.

Speaking to Sky News Australia on Sunday Mr Taylor said the Labor Government views the money as their own and not that of hard-working Australians.

“Labor promised that they weren’t going to change the goalposts on super, the Prime Minister was unambiguous on that,” Mr Taylor told Sky News Australia.

The government is claiming the superannuation tax change is not a “broken promise” because it doesn’t come into effect until after the next election, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says he's "prepared" to admit he should of ruled out introducing a capital gains tax on Australian family homes.

In a heated interview on Sunrise on Wednesday morning, Mr Chalmers was asked several times if the government would introduce changes to capital gains tax concessions on family homes as Labor come under fire for its proposed reform of superannuation.

But the Treasurer refused to rule out the major tax threat despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese later declaring it was a "bad idea".

Hours later on Wednesday, the Treasurer appeared in a press conference to address the latest GDP figures when Sky News Australia host Kieran Gilbert stepped in to ask about the future of the capital gains tax exemption.

"The Prime Minister said we're not going to impact the family home, full stop, exclamation mark, ruled out. Here is your opportunity to do the same," Gilbert said.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers made a “monumental gaffe” on Wednesday morning when he refused to rule out any changes to capital gains tax on the family home, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

The Treasurer later corrected himself and ruled out any possible reform during a media conference, admitting he should have done so when asked earlier that morning.

“It’s the worst Labor gaffe since Anthony Albanese couldn’t remember the unemployment rate in Launceston during the election campaign,” Mr Clennell said.

“This is a concern for Jim Chalmers going forward in terms of his performance.

“The suspicion hangs around him, that he would rather tax a lot more, and that Anthony Albanese would not.”
