Skeleton remains of European paleolithic hunter/gather populations suggest they were far smaller than the bigger robust and warlike Indo-European tribes who arrived by horse from the steppes of central Asia into Europe 5000 years ago. The meeting/clash of cultures led to the complete decimation (genocide) of the paleolithic Y chromosome and the male line and the complete absorption of the female X chromosome. By 2000BC all smaller pre-historic males (including those who built stonehenge in Britain) were wiped out by the bigger/taller Indo-Europeans who were called the Beaker and Corded Ware people.

Memory of these traumatic events were not forgotten in oral tradition and Tolkien's lore which he adopted from Scandanavian and Anglo-Saxon myth relegate these long forgotten "little people" as forest dwelling elves, dwarves and hobbits.

Actually the Cro Magon people of the Upper Paleolithic were taller than modern Europeans of today. But their body proportions were different. Longer limbed and more stretched out because they were adapted to the tropics because they had only recently migrated out of Africa. So they were built more like modern east Africans (built to dissipate body heat).

They entered Europe around 40 thousand years ago and drove the Neanderthals to extinction. They may have gotten shorter by neolithic times 35 thousand years later when the Indoeuropeans are thought to have invaded from the east.

The common notion you hear is that our ancestors were all shorter than we are. And folks commonly assume that the trend will continue and folks assume that our descendants will be taller than we are now. But only the poor peasantry were vertically impaired. The well fed aristocracy of the middle ages and ancient times were as tall as we are today. And we not likely to get taller. And the human skeleton cant withstand more height anyway. We are at the limit already and have been for thousands of years.

In a paper published in Nature, the researchers show that northern Europeans seem to have a stronger genetic link to a particularly tall nomadic population from the Eurasian steppe who came to Europe around 4,500 years ago. Because of these genes, northern Europeans are still tall compared to others on the continent.

The neanderthal population was always small so there was no warfare its more likely they were absorbed. 5% of our genome is Neanderthal.

In contrast small groups of horse riding Indo-Europeans basically wiped out millions of hunter/gather paleolithic peoples in what was the third mass genocide in human history

The first genocide was when Siberians wiped out indigenous people related to Australian aboriginals in south America 20-10,000 years

The second was when Chinese people wiped out aboriginal tribes in China and south east Asia and the pacific islands
