Is on fire except for down here in the Vancouver area pretty much.

Well, not everywhere - BC is 4x the size of the UK.

But a LOT. An entire town is gone. A lakeside resort.. levelled. Homes, businesses, forests - burnt. Many thousands of people are under mandatory evacuation orders. Videos from the highways show the massive infernos. It’s nuts.

We already have nowhere for people to live and now everyone who’s up in the Okanagan & other areas of BC are racing to the coast seeking shelter.

We’re not the only ones on fire, either. Fires are burning way up North threatening Yellowknife - the town has been evacuated.

More to come I’m sure. It’s gonna be a crazy end to the Summer and rain can’t possibly come soon enough. I’d even be okay with the rest of beach & kiteboarding season being rained out. But it doesn’t look like much rain in the forecast.. only severe thunder and lightning storms that’ll likely start more areas on fire.

People are evacuating, but so are horses and other animals. I’ve seen posts from people seeking help to move horses, move all the dogs from a shelter etc and another from someone with 30 acres people can bring animals to.

And there’s a whole lot of this going on:

It’s been 20 years since a bunch of Kelowna burned and my cousin went to operate emergency radio systems. Not sure if this time is worse - maybe.

Some guy in a motorcycle fb group said he just rode down through some of the worst of it and warned everyone not to travel East of Hope - stay local - everywhere else is on fire/at risk and there’s no sense in jamming up the roads.. nor trying to ride through thick smoke. So basically we’re good from the ocean in Vancouver to Hope about 100 miles away and then everywhere else is a no go zone. And that’s a lot of everywhere else as this isn’t a small place.

News clip with pics & vids of destruction:

Surprised there are only 30,000 people evacuated so far.. but another 36,000 on evacuation notice. Those numbers could rise really quickly if the wind shifts.

Greenpeace Canada

Mapping data recently released by NASA provides a concrete visual for Canada's record-breaking wildfire season. Over 15 million hectares have burned so far this year – well over the average, which is 2.1 million hectares/year.

And, according to estimates from the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service, the fires have spewed over 355 megatonnes of carbon through August 21.

These carbon emissions amount to more than double the previous Canadian annual total estimated fire emissions record. And scientists are now saying extreme wildfires threaten to break the global carbon budget by pushing forests over a tipping point from carbon sinks...to carbon emitters.

Efforts to save forests will fail unless Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions are brought down. The forests need #BoldClimateAction NOW >> https://act.gp/44rJvRC

Well, that’s no good.

Canada should be pumping out Bombardier Canadair waterbombers as fast as the factory in Quebec can make them. They’re apparently the best waterbomber in the world & cost $35M and last 30 years. $1.5M/yr in purchase costs and $1.5M/yr in operating costs. $3M/yr each. We should have a fleet of at least 100 of them. Other countries should station fleets of dozens of them as well. And then they should all be in operation nearly all the time - move them around the world depending on where is burning.

And we should be planting Billions of trees globally asap via every method possible. Manual labour, drones dropping seedlings.. everything everywhere all at once.
