While the race is neck-and-neck, I think Allred has a better path forward than if it had been a rematch with Beto.
While the 2018 matchup was indeed close, one thing to consider is that was before the El Paso and Uvalde shootings. I feel that Beto's "Yeah, I'm coming for your guns" remark, during his brief presidential campaign, alienated independent, on-the fence voters during the 2022 governor's race.
In a state like Texas or Florida, a Democrat has to be able to win over not only independents, but conservatives who are displeased with the GOP's increasingly hard-right trajectory. Allred has taken a far more nuanced approach to the big issues, rather than going for the jugular as Beto did, and this is why I consider Allred to be a more formidable candidate.
