That was a slip if I ever did hear one. Release the sausages!

An obvious slip, but lordy is that one going to haunt him. GBeebies might as well sack all their presenters and just broadcast that clip on a loop until Starmer's time is up.

I didn't think the word 'hostages' much resembled 'sausages', but then remembered that in a cafe where I occasionally had breakfast many years ago, one of the serving staff (an Italian, I think) pronounced 'sausages' as something like 'tottiges', which does sound quite like 'hostages', does it not?

Yeah. have been scratching my head about why Brits are flogging this so much for giggles. Is it just the innocent stupidity of it? Or is it because folks project homoerotic symbolism into it?

I say this because we Americans have had three recent presidents (W., Biden, and Trump) who were notorious for saying seemingly mentally impaired sentences on a regular basis!

I mean, the slip itself is inherently funny. I know it's a deadly serious matter but sausages is just a funny word and for many Brits, the seriousness of the matter makes it even funnier that he said it. Nothing to do with their phallic appearance. We love to see authority figures making arses of themselves. And we've always found sausages funny.

But there is more. We have a media which is disproportionately weighted towards right of centre politics. They've spent the last 5 years trying to convince everyone that the right-wing governments we've had in that time were serious politicians with serious ideas. Much of the media took a kicking in our last election as well as the Conservatives did. They're used to their readers and viewers doing what they are told to. This time they didn't.

So the majority of the media is in a mighty hurry to prove that voting Labour was a big mistake. The sooner they can get that story to stick the quicker the return to 'normal' i.e. right-wing politics.

There's also the fact that Starmer positioned himself as the sensible, competent alternative to Tory facetiousness. This slip up makes him look daft.

That's why they're making a much as possible of every Labour mis-step.

Misspeaks happen to all of us at some time or other,it's a natural part of being human. Those who see it as something to viciously mock and ridicule are the one's who truly show how unintelligent and thoroughly odious they are.

^ I think maybe you need to lighten up just a bit. I have a funny feeling that many people who take your line on this matter might find it quite 'permissible' to be amused by it if the person in question had been someone like Braverman or Rees-Mogg.

For good entertainment value, the US has Hollywood, whereas the UK has Westminster.
