Two cases of indiscriminate homicide
On November 11, 2024, 35 people were killed and 43 injured in a car crash at Zhuhai Sports Center in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, while the attacker tried to commit suicide after the attack.
According to the preliminary investigation report of Zhuhai Public Security Bureau, Fan committed the crime because he was dissatisfied with the result of property division after his divorce.
On November 16, 2024, at about 18:30 in the evening, a 21-year-old man, Xu Jiajin, attacked students in Wuxi Polytechnic College, Jingyi South Road, Yixing City, Wuxi, the People's Republic of China, with a knife. According to the police report, 8 people were killed and 17 injured in the attack.
A message circulating on the Internet suspected to have been left by the suspect said that his name was Xu Jiajin, who worked 16 hours a day, but was still in arrears of wages. In addition, his school (Wuxi Polytechnic College) refused to grant his diploma in arrears, so he hoped to promote the progress of the Labor Law by death . The police reported that Xu Moujin, a 2024 graduate of Wuxi Vocational and Technical College of Technology, returned to school to commit murder because he failed to pass the exam and was dissatisfied with the remuneration for his internship.
This may be related to the economic downturn. It's scary.

How are mental health issues discussed and handled within China? I feel like that's likely the second major contributing factor.

TBH, not super well. It is highly discouraged to express much in the way of emotions publicly. So, you don't really know how anybody is doing if you're not super close.
