I find it unlikely that stained pillows can have health effects.

Sounds like a pile of germaphobic fear mongering to me. What are we supposed to do, spend our lives in a bubble? Because that would make us even less resistant to germs and then a slight sniffle could kill us.

It means you forgot to use bleach the last time you washed your pillow slip. If it troubles you, you can always buy a new pillow slip or a new pillow. This is why pillow slips exist. It is like underwear for your pillow. It goes under your pillow case and is white so you can wash it with bleach to kill germs. There is a reason hospitals use white sheets.
