Beavers finish seven-year dam project in two days
The Czech government originally planned to build a dam in the Bridy Nature Reserve to protect the wetlands, but the application process was too complicated and construction was delayed. Unexpectedly, eight beavers helped build the dam almost "overnight". This not only saved the government 30 million Czech crowns in funds, but also provided a good living environment for many creatures because of the excellent location.
The dam construction project in the Buridi Nature Reserve was approved for construction in 2018, but was delayed for years due to land negotiations. The director of the reserve management bureau revealed that while the various units were still negotiating to resolve the land issue, the beavers had "built a dam for free without any written permission." It is said that the newly formed wetland area by the beaver dam is close to 20,000 square meters, which is twice the area previously planned.
Czech zoologist Fletschek said with a smile that the local government was no match for the beavers in this "competition". He said: "Beavers can build a dam in one to two nights. It would take a week for humans to complete it using excavators alone." An official from the Czech Nature and Landscape Conservation Agency said that the beavers' dam site selection was perfect, "better than our design on paper."
