I'm not sure if anyone remembers Koko the gorilla? Koko, a lowland gorilla taught American Sign Language (ASL), demonstrated an ability to communicate and understand language.

Not only was she self-aware of herself (from a mirror) but she also demonstrated "theory of mind," or understanding the mental states of others. Problem was, the scientific community objected to turning over current dogma and claimed she was demonstrating learned behavior (Stimulus-conditioning) and not really understanding other's perspectives.
