"Is your partner distant? Does he have poor social skills that make you shudder? Before you despair, it could be that he has undiagnosed Asperger’s syndrome"

Quote:
When Sarah Hendrickx met Keith Newton she thought he was just a little “weird” and was hurt by his apparent lack of concern for her feelings. Although they soon became lovers, she characterised him as a “heartless freak” while he saw her as an “overemotional troublemaker”.

As a marital therapist, I am familiar with this battle and most couples will have privately thought something similar about their partner at some point. However, Keith has Asperger’s syndrome, a type of autism characterised by an inability to read body language, poor social skills, sensory sensitivity and a narrow, obsessive range of interests.

It is thought that about 1 person in 100 is somewhere on this autism spectrum, but most remain unaware of their condition. So what’s it like loving someone with Asperger’s and, if some of the arguments sound like an extreme version of our own, what can the rest of us learn from the experience?

...Or they could just be introverted without adequate social skills.

People seem too quick to slap the Asperger's label on anything. Keep in mind that it's a neurological condition, not a synonym for introversion.

Flakey scores NT anytime he takes an aspie quiz...but he is definitely not "NT"..and I have seen him drive NT women bonkers.

He is obsessive, impulsive, does not make eye contact..is very smart, but devoid of common sense most of the time...Will either hyperfocus on something for hours, or not be able to focus at all....Sensitive to tastes, smells and sounds....is constantly losing things....kinda slow on the executive function side...has a funny voice (like me)

His interests are very broad though...

I have long concidered him to be more of an ADDer like me....and I have more AS-traits than he does....sorta....
His social skills are definitely better, and he does drive a car and stuff...unlike me..

Is that his actual name, or was he nicknamed that because of dandruff or something?

this made me laugh, because when someone named 'poopylungstuffing' refers to someone named 'Flakey' my first thought would not be asking where the name 'Flakey' came from. I would be wonderin' about the "Poopy Lung Stuffing," myself.

That is his nickname that I gave him...my name is my nickname.

Together we are Poopy and Flakey.

Yes he has dandruff, and flakey skin...and he is also...flakey...

I am not currently in a relationship, but my second relationship was with someone with AS. There were very few AS-related issues, and I think we were both borderline AS/NT.

Aut partners to be on the Spectrum?

I am not currently in a relationship, but both fathers of my children are NT. I have never met any AS men.

Both fathers complained about my lack of affection and demonstrating emotions. I do not do either very well. Too much drama, too much energy. :eew:
