Yikes! This is pretty shocking, considering how long Castro has been head of Cuba!

WOW! Not sure what to think. I never could understand for myself if he was truly a bad or good guy. Whatever I suppose maby he is both, on one hand he does take care of his population they have some of the best healthcare on Earth, but is a bit of a tyrant. 49 years is quite the political career. From what I understand the guy taking his place is not much more willing to negotiate with the US anymore the Fidel was.

I think this should be the start of something better for both the US and Cuba. I definatly think the Bush admin has really hurt if not killed US credibility worldwide and I hope the next president can try to patch things up with many nations, and Cuba should be one of them, afterall Cuba is only 90 miles from us, we need to be diplomatic because I think the US and Cuba both can benifit from a positive relationship and the US can learn ALOT from Cuba as far as healthcare goes because this is one area the US has some serious issues with unfortunatly.

I had a Spanish teacher from Cuba and she said that the healthcare in Cuba is NOT better than it is here. Instead of it being expensive, Cubans have the privilege of being unable to receive any healthcare at all 8O. For free! Yippee!

People who live in America who came from Cuba are not always the best source of info about Cuba... legal immigration from cuba has been nonexistent for over 40 years, plus there is a strong and vocal cuban dissident community in the US who pretty much try to paint as horrible a picture of Cuba as possible...

I saw a programme several years ago, and if television is to be believed, Cuba is pretty sad. They showed (of course) the Communist Indoctrination of school children, which was harrowing. They also showed people still driving fifities vintage USA cars. One bloke explained that he would keep making the bits the car needed to run. Poverty was everywhere, with factories sitting in ruins. Looked very, very bleak.

I doubt that any Cuban will really miss Castro...

Is there any reason to believe they have a motivation to lie about their homeland? Seems like the people who have been there are the ones to listen to. I've met people who managed to travel there on vacation and of course they paint a prettier picture, but I trust the views of the ones who were there living in the midst of it a bit more.

The people who were living there haven't been there in years... most came here in the 1960s, and the ones who came after were political dissidents who have plenty of reason to discredit the regime... i would believe people who'd been there recently over those who came here years ago as children or those who were ejected from their prisons and put out to sea and washed up on our shores...

That doesn't sound quite right to me, about the younger ones being political dissidents .... I'm no expert on Cuban issues but my Cuban-turned-Guatemalan friend was only 28 and a nun.

No I did not say Cuba had better healthcare then in the US, I said that like many other nations in the world Cuba has universal healthcare and from what I understand anyways is easier to access then in America because its prohibitivly expencive for many in the US, not a problem their, again... from what I understand.

In-Fidel politics topic

The revolution has been going on for 49 years. Castro is loathe to give it up, so his bro Raul is going to continue in the family business.

When I was a kid we were always hearing stories about plane hijackings to Castro country. Now Cuba is a tourist destination. Some of my relatives have gone there and they said they got their bang for the buck.

I wish them all the best of luck. :?

Great start! Now, if they can just lose the entire communist party after he and his brother die...
