If you go to "Teen with Autism Tasered by Police", you will find more info.

2002 was a very dark year for the Houston Police Department.

First of all, there were some serious mix-ups in the city's crime lab--and many cases went unsolved. This situation is still in the process of being corrected, and many wrongfully accused people are going free.

Second, in July 2002, there was a botched raid at a west Houston K-Mart (which has since closed due to K-Mart's bankruptcy problems at the time), and at two restaurants across the street. Police were cracking down on illegal street drag racing (which is very popular in Houston), and nearly every young adult that was present at any of those three businesses was arrested, even those who were legitimate customers. I think over 200 young adults were arrested. A high-ranking member of the police department was fired and barely escaped being sent to prison, and the police chief resigned shortly thereafter.

2006 will go down in the history books as a dark year for the Portland Police Bureau.

First, in March, former chief Derek Foxworth resigned over allegations that he was sexually harassing white female police officers & slept with Officer Angela Oswald. He even paid her to keep it quiet. Both are seeking back pay even though new Chief Rosie Sizer, hired in May, is not doing a better job of cleaning up Foxworth's mess. Mr. Foxworth is suing the city over allegations of racism against him.

In September, police officers murdered James Chasse, a schiziophernic homeless man in the Old Town area of Portland, very close to my HS, just because he was acting odd in public & the fact he was homeless. They beat him senseless & crushed his lungs in. This situation was resolved on October 17th with all three officers getting off clean, in which they will face no criminal charges.

In the early morning hours of December 22nd, police tasered an African-American, shirtless, barefoot teen with very severe autism because his symptoms made it look like he was "high on drugs". The teen's five-ten, 260 pound frame made him look "physically intimidating", according to the police report. They tasered him several times when he did not respond to their commands. The teen's grandmother is resolving this situation with the City of Portland.

Tim, were there any other cases involving police & autistic people in your area?

I have not heard of any.

Actually, I haven't heard of any situations with my local police using excessive force, but I do know that in nearby LA, there have been a couple of incidents. None of the alleged suspects were autistic, just minorities. The worst thing that happened just this past week was that 2 officers were shot during what is normally a routine traffic stop.

Haven't really heard of much in this area. Here it's mostly the provincial ministries getting up to some wacky hijinks more than the cops.
Lastest police fluff I can think of was a couple months back when police from the neighbouring municipality dropped off a lady who clearly needed some psychiatric assistance just over the municipal border.

Crime is bad in the metro area I am living in as I attend college, but I don't know if it has anything to do with the police being corrupt.Racist attacks by police have hardly been an issue in recent times in my state, which has a highly racist past.

If you're politically connected, you can probably get off the hook in some towns.

Tim, has the crime in Houston gotten noticeably worse since the Katrina victims moved in?

according to reports, it's gotten worse, but that's not actually a plausible identification. I'd have to check in with one of my contacts, see what he has.

My police department is so corrupt, "Hush money" is an official budget item.

My police department is so corrupt, they auction off their loyalty each week. They even advertise in the newspaper!

My police department is so corrupt, there are posters of Michael Chiklis on the station walls.

My police department is so corrupt, when black people see flashing lights in the rearview mirror, they pull over, get out of their cars, and beat the crap out of themselves just because it's more convenient that way.

I find that very amusing Werbert.

There are crack houses in operation barely even a block from our Police Dept. HQ, so I would have to say very corrupt.

That's nothing. Our police chief is a pimp.

No, I don't mean that he drives a nice car and wears nice clothes. I mean he is actually in charge of a group of prostitutes, and he beats them on a regular basis. Also, our mayor sometimes forgets his pants.

Our Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser "lost" his pants once. He was on a visit to the US in Memphis and has never been explained.
