Revealed: ‘invisible’ adults living with autism (Sunday Herald)

By Judith Duffy, Health Correspondent
Call for support for Scots with ‘lifelong condition’

MORE THAN half of adults with autism in Scotland do not get enough support and thousands struggle through life feeling isolated and ignored.

The largest-ever survey into the experiences of adults with autism has revealed that many have to battle to access services and are often completely dependent on their families.

According to the National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland report, due to be launched this week, 52% of adults have not had an assessment of their needs since the age of 18, just over one in 10 adults with autism is in full-time employment and more than half reported being bullied or harassed.

A Stone's throw Aut to be revealing topic

A responder to this article, John Stone, posted some rather controversial info on the MMR vaccine an the possible 'cause' of Autism.

I thought this myth had been debunked. He does no service to the cause by supplying this info. As it is, the article (not Stone's comment) does shed some light on the plight of Adults, who, like myself, lived many years before a diagnosis was made, and who had to put up with prejudice, and who still do.

we un DXed Adults with Aspergers' and Autism are coming out of the darkness and finally being able to get a little help with our issues, although we mostly do it our selves, since there is NO network for us but our own.

I hadn't been vaccinated until I was 4 years old, and I exhibited all the same signs of being me long before the MMR vaccination. Perhaps other folks have questions and doubts, but I suppose I am one of the lucky ones that don't get to feel like I am a 'victim' of 'big pharma'. Also I might be that lucky one that hasn't been treated to too much 'experimental' therapy, only being committed to one mental institution and getting shock treatment so I could 'snap out of it!!" ( as my mother put it).

I did escape and have tried to keep a pretty low profile since then, since I didn't want to be a 'victim' any more. I have only my own choices and chances to blame if I havn't made it in the NT world, and I like it like that.

I wish they had that where I live. This site is like a social group but I would prefer to talk to people in person. Social skills training would be really helpful.
