A group of people kept a 29-year-old mother with a childlike mind in their home to get her social security checks due to her developmental delay. They tortured her while she was there until she died apparently because they thought it was fun.

WARNING - The details are really sick so I won't post them. Be warned, this is one of the sickest news stories I've ever read. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080322/ap_ ... 7bT59H2ocA

This reminds me of another case: Genie the "Wild Child"

This is why I can't really sympathize with urban black youth. Some of them really are animals.

This is heartbreaking," police Lt. David Hayes said. "It was almost as though they were making fun of the abuse they were administering. This woman was almost like living in a prison."

Remind me never to go to prison; I might get glue gunned and tortured to death. at least, that's what he's implying. someone investiagte their prisons, please.

This is just ridiculous. I'm not sure if there is a word in the english language to describe how evil this was.

Statements like this are completely false. What do these 4 stupid kids have anything to do with urban black youth, who can be as empathetic, sweet, or cruel as white youth? Remember the four or five white teenagers who made a mentally challenged girl perform sex acts on them? Some kids are sociopathic and completely conscienceless- but must that trickle down to every single kid who looks like them?

I don't know why I let myself read that. It is so sad.

I agree. That was a completely racist statement. The color of ones skin does not in any way denote what kind of person they are. Replace the words "urban black youth" with any other race, creed, or even neurological make up, and see how you feel about it's truthfulness.

With that being said, I can't bring myself to read the article. I just know the images of what happened to that poor lady will get stuck inside of my head for days.

Saw the article before it was listed on WP & read it. Doesn't really surprise me, that people do horrible things to each other-it surprises me that people are surprised at such things. It does disturb me that such cruelties are brought upon vulnerable persons, by predatory persons. Suffering & pain of creatures, esp. when innocent (having done nothing to merit mistreatment) offends & frightens me.

The idealistic part of my mind says "You'd think someone would learn to enforce some laws, before such a situation got to this point"-but obviously, horrors are routine in our society, and the systems that allow such events to transpire are powerless to protect those who most need support. Rather, the jaded side of me figures that systems instead tend to concretize the status quo, including massive inequalities, inequities, disparities, and disadvantages. Those who are cunning enough to do mean things to abuse others while remaining undetected (at liberty to continue the abuse) is a threat to many of us. I'm lucky that somehow I've avoided becoming another statistic (as victim of a dangerous person)-feel bad for those who have been less fortunate.

Unfortunately, a lot of people have that nasty attitude, towards people with disabilities.

Torture chamber topic

We want to believe that someone has changed for the better. It would seem as if this Riley woman fooled people--a typical psychopathic/sociopathic ruse. She was also in a position of authority and trust. We need to keep tabs on anyone who has been in trouble in the past, for their own protection, and especially for others.

disgusting and tragic. i hope the torturers get a severe punishment(life in prison or the death penalty). things like this make it hard to trust humanity sometimes.
