God made everything for a reason so I support protecting the god given rights of animals however I think this law is pathetic. I say pass a law that will protect all animals not just our close cousins from mistreatment and having their lives ruined.

^ dude, lobsters are bugs. Apes and a handful of other animals are (apparently) "conscious". Get yer priorities straight.

So what happens if a chimpanzee is caught breaking the law? Does that chimp have the right to a fair trial and be tried by a jury of his/her peers? Does that chimp need to hire an attorney to defend him?
