Tranquilizers?

Somewhere Temple Grandin has said that she and some others with Asperger's need to be on tranquilizers for their lifetime. Which emboldens me to ask: do I really need to get totally off Xanax? Ten years ago, I took 4/day. I got it down to one (for years now), but can't seem to get rid of it entirely.

A note about Xanax - it's seriously addictive, and if taken in large quantities can kill. I'm noting these things by way of pointing out that it might not be so benevolent as it feels. fwiw, I'm not suicidal.

Please tell me what you think or know? Thank you.

back to the topic of Xanax ...

there are 5 leading theories of autism.

1. weak central coherence.
2. executive function impairment
3. mind-blindness
4. extreme male brain and a new theory

5. intense world theory.

1. suggets a failure to integrate information in a holistic or gestalt manner. we get little bits, not the big picture.
2. conflicts slightly with 1. in that we see the big picture but not the minutiae.
3. inability of connections between the brain and the amygdala to communicate effectively ( my faviourite)
4. suggests an excessive dose of testosterone in developing foetus' is an environmental trigger for some underlying genetic susceptibility.

5, the new theory.

the root causes of autism is due to a brain that cannot switch off. a supercharged brain hyperconnectivity of neurons and abundance of mini columns.

this hypothesis suggests that AS people perceive. remember and feel too much. according to classic thoeries of autism, the brain is underperforming..according to this theory the brain is over performing.
without bogging you down in too much detail, the theory proposes that hyperconnectivity, reactivity and plasticity in As individuals gives them a higher than normal capacity for processing information.

now to link this information with this thread and yoru question.

xanax is a benzodiazepine type drug....now this may not mean anything to you but for your information this drug is an anaesthetic ( a sedative)

so if you attempt to marry this new theory with your observation the two would fit...your brain is going to fast, your meds slow it down.

this is an associative observation and not clinically qualified , i am not a doctor ( i am a vet) hope it helps.

All psychiatric medications, as tranquilizers and anti-depressants, are strong, toxic drugs and can kill the people taking them...that's why patients require regular visits with the medical doctors prescribing these drugs. Xanax is an anti-anxiety medication used to calm a person when they feel stressed from every day life situations...and yes, Xanax can become addictive
because a patient (such as yourself) will need a higher dosage to get the same effect as your body builds up a drug tolerance over time.

Please be aware that you should not compare yourself to others. Every person is different...and what may work for Temple Grandin may not be appropriate for you.

I guess what I'm asking is whether there might be *such a thing* as needing tranqs for a lifetime, or any justification for it. I get the impression that everyone must strive for a zero tranquilizer intake.

I'm not comparing myself. It's just that I wouldn't have dared ask if somebody like Temple Grandin hadn't mentioned it.

Yes, I'm under supervision - a doctor, a nurse, a social worker.

Dont forget a number of series of Blackadder, and several series of A bit of fry and laurie, amongst other things. Though new to the states, hes very famous in the UK.

Tranquilizers can turn a psycho killer who's seriously bummer tripping with evil voices
into someone who just stares at the wall all day and doesn't care about doing nothing.
