That has been a fact of life as long as I can remember in the UK and probably most of the world. Higher education for those with financially well off parents rather than by ability of the student. Either that of the student ends up with massive debts or has to work while studying. Depending on your chosen course there just aren't enough hours in the day to dedicate to both study and earning a living. Sad fact of life.

Over here (victoria, australia and I think the rest of australia would be the same) we get interest free loans for uni fees which you only pay back after you earn a certain amount/year (38k or something). I know someone that lives on campus, all food + bills = $270 so you'd only need to earn about $400 a week = 20-25 hours of part time work to pay for yourself overall.

Then again I'm a city kid and don't understand their connection to the local community etc, they're not considerations for me in deciding whether to stay/go

Isn't there college scholarships available by the Australian federal or state governments?
