Findings revealed January 23 in the journal Theriogenology describe the use of frozen skin in 2003 to clone a bucardo, or Pyrenean ibex, a subspecies of Spanish ibex that went extinct in 2000.

Wow. This is super cool. Too bad it died though.

"The public should not leap to the conclusion that we are on the edge of cloning woolly mammoths or dinosaurs," he said. "Even if such embryos could be constructed, there are no appropriate surrogate mothers for long-dead species."

I can only see a problem with large dinosaurs, but maybe I don't know enough about biology. I can't see why it would not be possible to use a large elephant for the mammoths (the fetus could be removed before size became a problem - mammoths and elephants ARE related) and there is nothing that says that large dinosaurs need be cloned, there were many small species. Impregnate the host, remove the fetus before full development, and finish the development outside the womb - as is done for premature births now. Oh, brave new world!

This is pretty cool, it's a shame that it died shortly it was born.

The strangest thing mentioned in the article I thought was that a falling branch effectively rendered an entire species extinct.
