Mysterious UFO sightings may go hand in hand with a puzzling natural phenomenon known as sprites — flashes high in the atmosphere triggered by thunderstorms.

Hmm. That could explain some things yes, but it certainly cannot explain all UFO sightings.

The one I saw was definitely not a sprite... could've been a Mountain Dew, but definitely not a sprite...

LOL. Did you really see one? I'm not sure I ever have, but I do know people who have. And not made up either, ones where there is actual photographic evidence.

No, I've never seen one... a lot of my friends have though, a fact which I attribute to our being situated about halfway between the National Air Command and their main bombing range...

Some of the stories I hear defy explanation though, so it's hard to tell what people are seeing up there.

I just find it hard to believe that enlightened beings are willing to travel across light-years of space just to mutilate a cow or administer an anal probe, and then go home. I also think that if we were actually being visited by spacemen there would be some actual physical evidence of the fact.

I was just having a bit of fun. I lived in Wichita, Kansas as a child, near McConnell AFB and one night my family were sitting out in the summer night in the 1950's, not a lot of light from the town or streetlights back then, and some of the experimental air craft were flying over the house - a usual site. Chasing the prototype jets were a little galaxy of fireflies, swarming around the craft and then trailing after and then bunching around the other one and trailing off. My mother went absolutely ape s**t, screaming and calling the neighbors. I went into a trance watching the scene unfolding in the air up above our heads with tears streaming down my face. My brother thought it was . . . miraculous, I guess would be the best word for it, and later he joined every science fair and took every honors science course. . and my dad. My dad turned on his heel and went to the basement and turned on his ham radio. Later he came out and took my mother into the house, as she was hysterical and the neighbor ladies couldn't calm her down. My mother forever talked about it and my father would never mention it again. There was something in the local paper about 'strange lights' being sited and since there had been all that fuss up from Roswell, New Mexico back in the late 1940's . . .

I, on the other hand, was converted on the spot and never had a problem believing that more things are in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in some philosophies.

I agree. Intelligent beings would probably want to do much, much more. But I do think there are intelligent beings out there. I do believe they have found us. Or at least some of them.

If they're intelligent, I doubt they want anything to do with us...

My own experience: During a period of homelessness in 1990, just before the Soviet Union went tits-up, a period spent in the foothills of Mt. Rainier, my now-ex-wife and I saw a strange cigar-shaped craft near the mountain. It moved without making noise, rather slowly. When I shone my flashlight at it, all of its lights were extinguished, and it vanished behind the mountain.

Point to remember: We were almost due west, across the Cascade Mountains, from the Army's Yakima Test Range.

A few years later, I ran across an article in Popular Mechanics, about some of the classified Soviet devices we had recently learned about. One of them was a rigid zeppelin, designed to harvest logs from steep mountainsides (although the article did note its potential use as a sensor or light-weapon platform...). The article included a picture of the craft - the exact same craft I'd seen that night.

My best guess is that either US intelligence or a defector brought over the plans, and the Army built one, then took her out for a spin to see what she'd do. Since the craft was then classified, they had to hide when they knew someone in the woods below had seen them.

(It was a couple of weeks later that the county sheriff rousted us out - I thought nothing of it at the time...)

In any case, I'm telling my robot, V8 (V8's lab photo, above). V8 is easily impressed.

Unidentified is the cornerstone of every 'thought I saw'.

Apologies about the oversize photo of V8 & thank you for fixing this. However, V8 doesn't apologize since he's very glitzy :D

Great photo twoshots!

Interesting what was written above too. I've never had a close encounter (except some spottings here on WP). I did read news articles about a very peculiar happening here in Alaska - remote region. Although Unidentified, Flying, and Object - not a UFO, if you know what I mean. Instead an entirely unknown bird with a MASSIVE wingspan (firstly looked like an aircraft) flew over remote Western Alaska, supposedly over the what was the Bering Land Bridge. The bird has an estimated wingspan of liekly over 20 ft and looked like a prehistoric pterdactyl.

Even now zoologist are still discovering new species and Siberian regions can be unexplored. But it wasn't an Orange Crush, I promise! Or a V8.
