Quote:
Machiko Ochi, the daughter of the creator of Coco Farm & Winery, said the success of the vineyard and the students has been in part Gutlove's lack of formal training with the disabled.

"Bruce considers all of the residents colleagues," she said. "This is a big distinction. Treated as equals, the residents meet his expectations on the job."

Amazing how well you can do when you treat people like human beings! :D

Fantastic! I admire enterprises that engage the services of developmentally troubled folk. They get the self respect that comes from earning one's keep. Anyone who earns his living honestly is royalty in my sight.

Our local Stop and Shop hires people who have developmental difficulties (they used to be called "ret*ds"). I have noticed these people are quite cheerful and do their tasks well. They help bag the groceries and put the bags in the cart. For us old folks (we live in the geriatric capital of the world, Middlesex County, NJ) that is a big help. I like watching these guys earn an honest living (even if it is modest) and I always make sure to thank them for their efforts.

Magnificent! I'm going to Japan this summer for three weeks, I'll try and read up some more on them. I'm just under the legal Japanese drinking age (20) but I hope I could visit.
