I don't believe in god, his hyper powers or his endless love. It just sounds like a bad joke.

I had an existential breakdown when I was 15 and went from vaguely believing in God to not even believing I was real. When I recovered from that, I became Agnostic, and am currently, at 18, an Atheist.

I am an Atheist
I refer to Christians as children who believe in Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy, "they don't realize the fact that the story is absolutely ludicrous as they are blinded by their lust of reward"

The Christian religion promotes hate and stupidity.

Then does Atheism promote condescension towards Christians?

I don't believe in "God", as such, but I believe that there might possibly be more to the universe than what science can tell us.

well, you are hating the christian church with stupid reasons, so does atheism do the same?

Because A spreads hate, B spreads hate agains A.
You reject christianity, because they reject others?
It sounds kinda circular :P

Anyway, I get your point, only I do not fully agree. Belief (in a god, but also in anything else) does actually serve quite some purposes. All of which are replaceable, indeed, but there are still good reasons to believe in a god. Plus, even if no god existed, we made one by en masse believing in his existance - we created something to hold on to, when in our own lives there was nothing left to keep us from falling. But well, that's quite a complex story so I won't go into detail...

Second, I don't at all like the church, because it is a 'kingdom' of god, where it should be either a democracy, without any instance governing all, or no public religion at all. Doing something in name of a god is ridiculous. Saying that god talks to you is also so. Talking to god is not, as it serves a damn good psychological purpose - no matter whether a god exists or not. But in my opinion the best religion is a private religion as it is fully customised to you, and will less quickly get you to do the stupid things christianity tells people to do. Also there is no danger of religious wars or religious instances, so most negative arguments will become invalid, then, as well. In fact, more and more people have this kind of personal religion nowadays, sometimes even without them realising it.

People desperately holding on to science or even seeing science as a replacement for religion: please do not. Science substitutes but a part of religion, namely the explanation of the world. But even that it fails to do comprehensively, as science became to be the playroom of the intellectuals, thus denying most other people and giving them no good reason to turn away from their god. (In the end they will probably do so, but this is because the christian god is 'dead', as Nietsche put it - if you look at statistics most people still believe; Not in a christian god, but rather just in 'something', further undefined)

But... errr... so far my opinion 8)

No, I do not believe in any god. I do believe in some kind of unity, but that is something quite different, I guess.
I see no worth in popular religions, as they largely defeat the purpose of believing by creating too much rules etc.

And everyone screaming they are atheist:
- Do you mean you do not believe in a god (a-theis) but you do believe in something?
or
- Do you mean that you think there is nothing other than the empirical world?

Just curious :)

(Sigh... so much to do at 0:22 on Sunday morning. For all those ppl wondering where the inspiration to write this article came from... )
(Oh, and what about my english? Is it alright? I've got a Cambridge Proficiency Exam in about 3 weeks, so any remarks about my english are welcome as well... :) )

God, yes, but not religion. I also believe in science and evolution. Philosophy section has some good forums.

Yes, I cant see a reason not to. (IMHO of course) But relgion, nah, who needs all that useless ritural and prayer when all you need is the feeling of the rain falling softly on your face. God is in the rain right? (Cookie to whoever gets the reference!)

Kind of. I don't believe that the Bible is true, and I don't believe that there is one Lord who physically exists.

I think that the Lord is a construct of science and lore and so on, and I do think that there is a divine influence on things even if it is not exacted by one being.

Religion, for me, is a set of beliefs, values, and stories that are supposed to aid some people in living their lives. For me, it is something to cling to, and I think that following rites makes me personally a more spiritual and introspective person.

Religion merely satisfies the human need to know how they came to be. The most ambiguous and all-encompassing creation stories belong to the longest-lived religions because they cannot easily be disproved.

My brain just doesn't allow me to believe in traditional deist religions.

I'm Catholic, so of course I believe in God. I love Him very much.
