I was diagnosed with Asperger's, but I just realized I might have mild autism. Here's why:
*I had meltdowns until I was 13.
*I acted really weird until recently, and anyone could have guessed that I had special needs.

I'm as good at telling how people feel as an NT, though, and I make eye contact because I've practiced.

Do you think I have mild autism?

no one can tell from reading.

and if they could you still didnt provide enough information.

Labels are labels. Labels shouldn't mean very much at all. I wouldn't trust doctors or psycs or therapists for telling you what you are.

lots of Aspies have meltdowns at later ages than most people (I certainly still do, but I'm only 12) and there are many different functioning levels of Asperger's; some people with HFA might be higher-functioning than an Aspie, but I'm really high-functioning for an aspie (compared to the aspies I've met) so I may not know where you're coming from.

asperger's is a form of autism. the only real "difference" is when you learned to talk.

According to the upcoming DSM V, there is no difference, so there is nothing to worry about.

I'm not sure about you. I was diagnosed with Asperger's at 5. I still have melt downs, can't read people, don't have very good fine motor skills(I even have a huge delay in them actually) I get obsessive over certain topics and hobbies, I have sensory issues and OCDs, as well as a few learning disabilites. So I'm not even sure about myself.

Actually I am under the impression AS IS mild autism.
It's a spectrum

The autism spectrum is quite broad and is difficult to diagnose. It also depends what sets of criteria were used during your diagnosis. It is not something to be bothered about.

Learning how to cope with it is much more important. And being happy with yourself.

you spelled asperger's wrong. there is no B in asperger's.
also it's "disabilities"

also, why does it even matter? autism is autism. it's a spectrum, but it really doesn't matter what adjectives you append to it because it doesn't manifest the same in every individual. you might define yourself as "aspie" but have more in common with a particular individual who is "HFA" than a different "aspie", or vice versa.

and are you implying that an "aspie" would have "gotten over" their autism by your age? i'm pretty sure i'm older than you and i still have meltdowns, social issues, dysgraphia, obsessions, and sensory issues... i'm not sure about learning disabilities but probably (it depends what you count)

according to my old school i don't have learning disabilities.. but then, this is the same school that said i was "too smart" for any help (apparently smart people aren't allowed to be completely absent-minded and have MAJOR issues dealing with stress) and that ADD (ADHD inattentive, now) is a "medical problem", not a "learning disability", and therefore warrants no assistance.
but that's an unrelated rant.

Asperger's is a form/degree of autism, so technically, aspies are autistic. I am diagnosed with asperger's as well and have melt downs without meds, social issues, i go to an alternative learning/special needs school, i act "weird", i do make eye contact and have no problem talking about my feelings, have depression and anxiety, and i am dyslexic and dsygraphic.

To some people on this thread: Asperger's and mild autism aren't EXACTLY the same thing. The main difference from Asperger's and mild/high-functioning autism is that with Asperger's, you would develop language normally.

To your question, it really depends on whether you developed your language at a typical age or not.

You are an aspie. People with HFA don't talk until they reach a certain age and are not shy, but rather really bad at socializing. Aspies act weird when the Asperger's really kicks in at about 10. Then they settle down. For people with HFA, there is no fluctuation.

That's interesting. So people with Asperger's shouldn't need a support forum for long?

Well I can read people sometimes and I have Aspergers. I think the label doesn't matter so much as what you think of yourself.
