19, still on a permit. Can't stand being behind the wheel. It feels like I have a new body and I don't have the instincts to work the limbs safely.

I think I got my starters when I was 16, driving alone when I was about 18 or so?

I love driving - if everyone else can do it there is no reason you cant (if you are fearing it)

I took driver's ed,and I had the permit that you get at 15. I am getting my license this Wednesday(I'm 16).

I had a learners permit for over 10 years.That was my own choice.I did not and still don't own my own car.When I first learnt to drive I drove an automatic car.I learnt to drive along dirt tracks and little used back roads.This presented problems later as I would freak out when ever another car was on the road.I eventually overcame this by practising driving on increasingly busy roads.Later on I was determined to drive a manual car,but every time I got behind the steering wheel I would have major panic attacks.I became a totally different person behind the steering wheel of a manual car.I had no confidence.My brain would go on overload as there were too many things to concentrate on.I thought that if I kept on trying I would eventually get over it.I spent much time and many dollars on driving schools.Many instructors commented on how much my hands would sweat.
I finally came to terms with my situation I am a very good driver and have alot of confidence behind the steering wheel of an automatic car.I am just not meant to drive a manual car.At age 33 I got my open licence.Good Luck!

I don't remember how long I had my learner's permit, but I got my driver's license when I was 17. Passed with a 97/100, Northern California. However, I didn't drive for a few months after that, because I was absolutely terrified to drive with nobody else in the car. After a span of months, though, I pretty much was forced to confront that fear and drive on my own, because I had to pick up my mother or my brother from the BART station. Of course eventually my fear went away, and now I'm completely comfortable behind the wheel.

Oh, Bloody Hell! I've posted in the Adolecent Forum again. I'm 32 years old! Why do I keep on making this mistake?

It doesn't matter! You only have to feel like an adolescent to post here. Why do you think I qualify to post in the Kid's Crater (yes, I hang out there!)

Not much public transport outside of a few cities in the US, I'm afraid.

As for the topic at hand, I've got a permit but I don't like to drive; however, that's a situation that cannot last. Edit: Senior is HS, btw.

I'll never be able to drive due to problems with my eyesight. I don't worry unduly - someone else can drove for me instead.

I've got a permit, but don't actually use it much. This is a problem, as I will be needed to ferry my sibs about as soon as possible and need to practice. >>

I don't drive, and I don't think I ever will. I like buses. And bicycles.

I would like to learn to drive but i am terrified of causing some sort of major accident, i can not cross a road safely, which doesn't give me much confidence about driving.

When i am out i tend to focus on one thing, like the pavement i am walking on, which means i do not see other peole or oncoming traffic, i can just imagine the trouble i'd cause if i did this in a car.

Also, other drivers make me nervous, i was out with my father at 6 am and we were behind a person who clearly needed sleep, they were weaving all over the road onto the other side despite oncoming traffic and my father had to flash them several times, while this occurred i put my hands over my eyes and refused to look. I doubt i could do that while driving.

Me too. I hope to get my Driver's licencse when I'm 18 but with my anxiety and the fact taht I freeze when I panic, that may not be a realistic goal. I don't have my permit either. I'm 17 and taking public transport doesn't bother me either. I'll probably do it forever. I just look at it as it's cheaper than gas prices now adays...lol! So you're not the only one Cockneyrebel!
