Anyone else have "mature" interests for their age?

...and have trouble finding other people their age who are into those things?

I ask because I had a really awkward experience over the past few months when I went to a Japanese cultural discussion group and expected to meet a bunch of high school/uni students there, but almost everyone there was around my parents' age apart from one 25-year-old and me (17). It really frustrates me that hardly any other teenagers are into these things and would rather go to the movies/party/paint their nails, and I stopped going because the age gap was too huge.

Well...maybe teens are not drawn to things like "Japanese culture discussion groups", but Im sure you can find teens into animie, or manga, or martial arts, or J-pop, and that sorta thing.

I find anime and manga boring... It's because of my aversion to fiction. I can't suspend my disbelief over giant robots, or normal kids transforming into superheroes. Sorry. Just can't. Even if the story's realistic, I find the art ugly too.

I can relate to that issue. I'm 26, and I have a hard time finding people my age that share my intense interest in classical music and silent film, particularly the latter.

'm the opposite, I guess. I'm 51 but with the mind of a teenager. I still play video games and such. Very sad.

That's not sad! My dad is in his 50's, and he plays a lot of video games. ...And he's cool. :)

I don't think that my interests (fictional books, video games, comedy, pop culture, philosophical discussion) are particularly mature but I can definitely relate to the feeling of disconnection with your age group. I've always felt it to some extent.

My most mature trait would be my love of History. Also I might be wrong but I think my interest in the anime Fullmetal Alchemist is fairly mature.

@TheWadeSmellbringer
Full metal alchemist is a shonen.

As for the question: classical music and my mild obsession with writing ai code.

I find it hard to find people interested in the same things as me at ANY age.

However I do find it more hardest to find other teens who like older movies (as in, 1920s to 1990s range).

I have literally watched 100 year old movies (I've seen movies from 1914 on the old movie channels).

In my life it has seemed there was always an age gap of some kind. I've always found it easier to get on with people who are at least a few years older than me.

Interesting, isn't it?

Had this problem all the time, but when I got to university it was a lot easier to find people with similar interests.

Kinda hard to find people who love musicology enough to major in it when you're in high school :/

I enjoy visual novels. It's hard to find fans of those in general outside of the Internet, let alone young ones...

(Probably because most of the games released are 18+, though all the ones I've played are all-ages, 13+, or 16+.)

I like old music and video games, and most of the movies I like are old too, even though I'm not much of a film buff. The 80s and 90s were my two favorite decades for popular culture, and I'm developing an appreciation for the 70s as well. In some ways I actually wish I was born in the 70s or 80s, so that I could have experienced the 80s or 90s firsthand. Then again, autism awareness wasn't such a big thing in those decades, and since I was non-verbal until I was 3, I might not have done well.

But honestly, I would much rather listen to Skinny Puppy's old albums than whatever Justin Bieber or LMFAO have puked up recently, and I would rather play Syndicate, a 20 year old MS DOS game, than the latest Call of Duty.

I'm not *quite* interested in the same things older people are interested in, but I'm very much interested in things that are old in and of themselves. I don't know what happened, it's like millenials ruined s**t or something. My generation is at fault for ruining pop culture.

When I was into amateur astromomy it definetly felt similar to this, as almost everyone in the local club was quite older than me.

In all science fiction message boards and on conventions most people are older, sometimes much older than me. There are not many teens who are obsessed with that stuff. xD
