But then what if s/he wants to know what is so damned funny?

An inappropriate laugh *could* resut in a broken nose!

 Do you routinely hang out with people who punch others? 8O
In any case, it'd certainly clarify the issue, wouldn't it? This is not a place or a person I would care to be around in the future. :P

I love clarity...

No, I do not hang out with people who would punch, but I used to work in a large place with a lot of people from various backgrounds and cultures ... and I am not really even "street smart", let alone "culture wise". So along with hoping to not appear too wierd or anti-social or whatever, I still often had to ask for insights and explanations in order to know how to sort things out and respond without greatly offending anyone.

I've been slowly learning to take jokes over the years, but even to this day I still have issues in that department.

I take things literally, jokes are hard to deal with because I don't realize that they are jokes and not insults. Although I honestly think the "just joking" and "learn to take a joke" is just what they say to make offensive comments okay.

Hm... Am I an exception in this area too? Huzzah!
I've been using sarcasm ever since I was a small child! It's all tone of voice, which I'm good at. 8)
And, despite traditional definitions, humor can be quite literal. (People who know me well find me funny.)
