You are right about one thing...backstabbing is politics...but not good politics. They don't teach that in social skills training, I can assure you of that. This is one skill you don't want to learn Fraac. If you do practice it, you might want to UNLEARN it.

I think 'social skills' is about climbing the ladder, knowing how to get ahead. I think it has nothing to do with respect. I think this is the source of a lot of autistic confusion, because we can feel respect and learn politeness - which should be sufficient - but when they say you're lacking social skills they're implicitly meaning a lot of stuff that they wouldn't like to admit.

Not just how to kiss arse, but how to kiss the right arse. I totally think that's what it means. If we're honest.

edit: changed ass back to arse. Can't quite pull off American colloquialisms.

no...ass was right...just your concept is a little skewed. Treating everybody the same respectful way does not mean you are kissing someone's ass. Only the ignorant who don't know how to treat anybody will think you are kissing ass.

Social skills aren't necessarily about manipulating people to get ahead, they're about knowing how to make friends, fend off enemies, and generally communicate effectively. You don't have to use them for selfish, "bad" purposes, though you do use them to benefit yourself.
