Dr. Phil is the real life Fraiser Krane, not actually good enough to have his own practice.

I did pot a lot when I was 13/14 but only very rarely now. It's overrated, really.

Some of you guys may actually be allergic. In fact, Cockney's experience/reaction sounds almost exactly like an uncle-in-law who was allergic and tried to grow a strain he wasn't allergic to. (Kind of a waste, if y'ask me. Just move on to booze or something... but anyway)
Dr. Phil can kiss my ass. He and many others like him have spouted so much BS (about pot as well as other things) for so long it's not even funny.
For example: who here believes pot can kill you or that you can OD on pot?
Or, how many here believe that pot lowers your sperm count?
It goes on and on.
I honestly didn't think I'd run into that mindset here.

@ Diseased: You can actually OD on pot, it just takes about 10 spliffs over 24 hours to do that. But who on Earth is going to do that? There's been 1 case recorded where someone's died of THC (active ingredient in pot) overdose in medical history, so yeah. That guy is a bullshitter.

They're starting to shove it down everyone's throats that cannabis can cause schizophrenia, too. Truth be told, no, it can't. Schizophrenia is genetic, and the people who have supposedly developed schizophrenia from pot, just didn't. The worst it can do is trigger someone's predisposition to becoming schizophrenic, but 1) they were going to become schizophrenic anyway, they just developed it earlier because of pot and 2) pot triggering a predisposition to schizophrenia is different to it triggerring it in people who have no disposition.

A few weeks ago we read this book about cannabis at school and it was called "The Cannabis Debate" Well... From the title you'd think it'd be a balanced discussion. But no... It was about as biased towards "pot will kill you" as you can imagine. It claimed cannabis destroys your sex drive, your confidnce, your motivation, etc. and a single spliff can have an affect on your brain for up to 4 months after. BS! It was completely unsourced! They just shove these things into books and give them to teenagers because they know the vast majority of them don't have the brains to cotton on to the fact you can't trust a "scientific" work that doesn't have any "checkable" sources.

Dude... 10 joints in 24 hours will most emphatically not kill you.
Been there, done that. Several times. Most studies suggest that the lethal dose for THC (in adult humans) is technically unachievable, requiring ingestion of nearly 40 lbs (at a rate of 5% THC by volume... personally, that's pretty crappy weed.)

Rest of the post I agree with.
Went through the roof one time when my sister-in-law came down for the weekend. "We're doing drug education and awareness in school!"
"Oh, neat, have they talked about some of the new addiction therapies or harm reduction measures?"
"Huh? She just said pot will kill us, so don't try it."
KAPOW
diseased goes ballistic

The War on Drugs is a farce. A very expensive, nonproductive, unwinnable pseudo-war.
It's gone on far too long, wasted far too much money, ruined more lives than drugs (I'd be willing to bet... I guess at some point I'll look up some sources), and spread more misinformation than I'd've ever thought possible. The history of the War on Drugs is one of racism, greed, paranoia, propaganda, state-supported terrorism and outright BS.
If you want to have a winnable war on drugs, you can go about it one of two ways.
1) Outright war. Someone's caught with a joint? Immediate execution. Zero tolerance. Period. I don't care if it's the presidents' daughter caught tokin up in the bathroom. Execution. No special treatment, no "treatment", no rehab.
2)Paintball guns and LSD IV drips.
The big problem now is that if the administration (forget Bush for now, this predates him) admits that its policy is a failure, there's the fear that the US will become a nation of drug zombies overnight. This is flat out BS. It's long past time to admit their mistakes and implement a responsible, realistic drug policy.
For example... why is psylocibin a controlled substance? I have not once known of personally nor heard of any fatalities related to this fungus. If I choose to ingest it, who have I harmed? Certainly not myself... I enjoy the effects and I can tell you first-hand that my brain loves the extra serotonin.
If some guy in the UK chooses to grow a cannabis plant for personal use, who has he harmed?
I'm not even going to get into the still-semi-controversial ibogaine treatment for addiction, despite the fact that I think it's a great idea.

(sorry... hadn't intended this to sound ranty... this just happens to be one of my 'buttons', so to speak)

I tried it a few times when I was a university student. I rather liked it. But not enough to continue using it after I graduated. (For one thing, I haven't a clue as to how to go about buying it.) So it's been almost 22 years now... (I finished university in 1985.)

False - That was floated about in the 70s IIRC but contradicted by more recent research.

although you might be thinking of alcohol, in which case youd be spot on as it lowers androgens whilst increasing estrogens (the behaviourial changes you sometimes see in intoxicated people are due to fluctuations in other, non-sexual hormones)

OK, wow!!

Pot is no where close to as bad as most LEGAL medications out there. Someone stated they don't use pot because of the amount of other drugs in their system. No one questions that?? You see something with a mere label of 'illegal' on it and everyone thinks its the devil. Slap 'legal' on Marijuana and I bet no one would ever question it. Funny our the language works eh?

Guess what? Its not that bad. My doctor stated Caffeine as a bigger concern of is then weed. He is more concerned about energy drinks then pot - He told me all sorts of people use it - the pharmacist I used to work with used it (that guy STUDIED chemistry)

There have been little to NO reported deaths due to marijuana intake. You would SUFFOCATE before you O.D.'d (meaning the cause of death was lack of oxygen). Any deaths result from doing something stupid, like driving, and in 90% of accidents where the user was HIGH, he was also DRUNK - pot gets the blame though.

Many side effects outside of "short term memory" loss have not been proven, only speculated. THAT is not conclusive.

Studying marijuana has been difficult because the government keeps it illegal - People abuse legal drugs more then illegal drugs. Why is marijuana illegal? It may dampen 'legal' drug sales? You realize the amount of money in that?

Alcohol kills brain cells, new studies are indicating marijuana has the potential of growing brain neurons
http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/10/16/103117.php < -- blog but the article is in medical journals
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15145917/ < -- alzeheimers prevention through marijuana?? But I thought it was bad for the brain? Alzeheimers DECAYS the brain yet this drug aka plant may prevent it?

Marijuana is NOT a danger to society. In moderation, it can actually be quite helpful. The depression drugs many people here take contain MORE side effects then Marijuana does.

I'm short on time, I will post more this weekend - Marijuana happens to be an obsession of mine (please dont take that as an addiction as marijuana is proven to be 0.5% addicting to its users). I smoke everyday but the amount I smoke is minimal (3 hits). I'm highly interested in this plant and quite frankly, most of the resources out there have one thing in mind - to keep it illegal. Right OR wrong.

Use it responsibly, it will NOT hurt you. People want to prove it will but you'll notice they always have the toughest time and look for people who may have other problems. If you become depressed off of this plant then maybe you were already depressed - Pot is easy to blame, hard for people to understand. Let me pile up resources for you and your curiousity.

Between you and me, if you wanted to get high or drunk, I'd recommend you get high.

As well, I use pot to meditate, no to get "Wasted." This subject is in a gray area simply because of the word 'illegal' being associated with it. Alcohol is LEGAL and its a drain, mega drain, on society, and its easy to find deaths from alcohol. Find me deaths by Marijuana.

In fact, everyone look up 'deaths by pot intake' or something similar on google. You wont find much. do the same for alcohol, cocaine, etc. You'll find lots. Christ, I'm still at work - i cant help but talk about this subject :)

Actually, Corvus peripherally brings up a good point, something that's been one of my 'insta-pissed' triggers for quite a while. Namely, the perception of people who smoke by those who don't.
I've smoked pot off and on for going on 15 years (give or take) now. This does not by default mean that I spend every minute of every day wasted off my ass. It does not mean that I'm wearing all-hemp clothing and have giant potleaf stickers plastered on every available surface. It does not mean that I'm some stoner burnout. It does not mean that my ass is permanently glued to the couch with a box of Twinkies. It also does not, by any stretch of the imagination, indicate that I also use crack, meth, coke, heroin, etc. It doesn't mean that I have zero morality, nor do I talk like a surfer.
All it means is that I choose, on occasion, to smoke a plant. Psychoactive ingredients aside, I see no difference between smoking pot and smoking dandelion tops (or whathaveyou).
I strongly believe that some people can use various chemicals responsibly if they so choose. I happen to be one of them. I don't drive while intoxicated, I don't operate power tools, nor do I do my tax returns whilst inebriated. That'd be stupid. Intoxication is intoxication, regardless of intoxicant.
Now, having said all this, I'm more than aware that there ARE hippystonerburnouts out there who DO spend all day glued to the couch watching cartoons and eating Fritos. There are also people who ignore the speed limit without wearing a seatbelt, in a poorly maintained vehicle, but we don't go around condemning all drivers based on the actions of a few 'tards.
Can't tell you how many times I've gotten the reaction where, upon finding out I smoke/have smoked pot, someone looks at me like I've just morphed into the lovechild Jimi Hendrix and Marylin Manson and am snorting cocaine from their 14-year old daughters chest.

Hacker_mage... stop getting your info from Reefer Madness, eh? (Unless, of course, you were joking.)

Diseased, from British Columbia - Of course you smoke! 8) I'm kidding dude, and I know the stereotypes are OLD as hell itself. It drives me NUTS! People will state, like I just did, that they are joking but most of the time I don't think they are.

They have one burned out stoner friend and they base their whole view on Marijuana over that one person! I've many friends who smoke.

I don't sit at home eating cheetos all day, although I do pretty much stay home all day (before AND after the drug). Someone stated 'aspies and marijuana don't mix' but I think they mix quite well (personal opinion).

I have a friend who sits in his basement all day, he smokes, and he blames the world on everything. He is my example of someone who doesn't know when he is in trouble (I wouldnt blame the pot on his problems, I'd blame the fact he blames everyone for everything). Pot is rarely the blame, the blame starts at the individual - The plant does not force itself in you - its called discipline - last seen in medieval Japan circa 1434 A.D.

Marijuana is VERY tame compared to many drugs out there. Just think, you take Tylenol to relieve a headache but take too many, you die. You cannot do that with Marijuana.

Quick tidbit:
When the U.S. first banned Marijuana, it was more out of racial intentions. Scientist back THEN proved it wasn't very bad but that study was burned by the man who made the law. We want to live in a world of logic, lets start looking at facts and not biased, one sided opinions (I'll argue both sides, if you want, but it gets tiresome going over the same, bitter, beaten down, inconclusive arguments for the 'Con' side while the 'Pro' side has new arguments added weekly)

Harry J. Anslinger.
Who, in an ironic twist, developed an opiate addiction later in life as he dealt with cancer.

This (the circular arguments, reliant on 'Well, I know what I know and pot's bad') is why I tend not to actively participate in threads on the topic anymore.

and side note: BC actually does have some hellaciously good weed. Easily the best I've smoked, and I've tried quite a bit.

People should either USE it and KNOW it (so study it) or don't and not care about it (or study it).
