I swear quite often especially when my lunatic dog tries to occupy the space my legs are while I am standing on them.

When I drop something especially on my foot it can be accompanied by swearing.

Being sworn at however is something that I don't like and may result in that person having their ancestry questioned in such a way as they don't know that they're being insulted.

I sometimes get annoyed with just how much my classmates at school swear, I noticed back in 9th grade that s**t, ass, and b***h in particular are the ones that adolescents/teens seem to like to use to the most. I also don’t like to hear my parents cuss, sometimes my mom swears under her breath if she’s really mad at one of us and I don’t like it.
That said, I’m myself relatively liberal with cussing, often exclaiming “s**t!” if something goes wrong or even “f**k!” if I feel I messed up. My siblings have pointed out my potential hypocrisy...

I hated swearing as a teen as well. Unnecessary profanity still bothers me, but I now realize that sometimes the word one needs to properly convey something is a swear word. Not very often, though. Only in the past year or two have I even stopped editing what I’m reading in my head to remove swear words. Considering my particular area of interest (the supernatural), I have to accept “hell” and “damn” used in the literal sense, but I hate when people just casually throw them around. Basically it really bothers me when people swear and don’t really think about what they’re actually saying with them, like casually throwing around things like “God damn it/you/etc.”

i have no opinion now as i realized the worse life there comes a point where if u dont swear u will resort to something worse like self-injury or breaking a teacup--

and it's a relief to just convey strong feelings with the same emphasis.
auntblabby once shared a link on WP about how swearing in tough times helps you overcome the stress somehow, i forget, but it sounded convincing enough..

i used to find it silly, or lame, depending on how much the person was swearing - but really i just overlooked it and didn't mind except thought the person could often convey more understandably with other words, if they wanted to be understood, instead of getting mad when ppl cannot understand them after they riddle their dialogue with expletives

. even in those over the top cases, it's just so overdone, that it holds no real offense.

funny how i noticed little kids loved swearing in some areas
and in other areas were absolutely incapable or sheltered from it ..
but my SON picked it up once from daycare--
and said it here and there!

he literally quoted a conversation (as he usually does) both people in it--

again and again -
and it was something like
(my son saying it with all the tones and everything they must have used)
"xyz (some random child's name) come here. (in authoritative tone)
no! (in childs tone) xyz, no fighting ! stop it. come here please. come here please.
no! F- you! xyz wash your hands. sit down please." (roughly what my son said again and again)

it was so funny
he realized i was laughing at the F- you, part to my brother (in a conversation later) and then decided he would keep saying that part again and again. then i had to beg him to stop adn bribed him with brownies.

I was looking for someone who could relate to me and I’m glad I finally did. Being diagnosed with autism, I have an irrational sensitivity to people swearing (specifically when people say “f—k”) that started when I was eight and got worse in my teenage years. I wish I didn’t feel this way, but I have it so deeply ingrained into my head. I’m trying therapy to get through the trap I’ve been in with how that word affects my life. Sometimes, I can actually handle the word just fine, but sometimes it feels like a punch in the gut. And there are many factors for me that go into this, such as the speaker’s tone and volume, who in particular is using it, and a variety of others. My crippling sensitivity to the f word has made my sociability level go down by a long shot, and I avoid going to a lot of places where I worry that people will say it in conversation a lot. I have also had so many incidents in my life where I felt intense feelings of emotional distress after it happened in a certain manner such as the two I mentioned previously. Even the moment of my high school graduation was severely affected because I was devastated by a student’s f bomb tirade. I even wrote a story about how much it affects me almost two years ago as I’m typing this while ending it in an optimistic way, and I was still extremely sensitive to that word even after. It almost feels like a rare mental condition that I have been trapped with. Luckily, I have family that believes in me and they say I am going in the right direction, and there is still room for improvement for me to have an easier time with hearing people use that word, and I am getting some helpful advice. I really hope this eventually works because I’ll feel so much better once I fully get myself out of these chains with how much swear words have affected me throughout my life.

Hi United and welcome to WP.

My parents in law were fond of the phrase "Jam and butter it, you muddy bucket of pitch"

You might want to steer clear of Thrash-puppy central
It seems that 90% of the music I like needs an explicit language warning.
The whole point of punk was to offend!

Personally, I find obscenity colours and enhances speech, but won't use it to cause offence unless I see offense as deserved.

Addendum.
Does the censorship technique of replacing some letters with asterisks work for you?
To me it seems as useful as a string bikini on Mercury

Re-edit
How does this sensitivity to profanity work with multi-valent words like "p****" ?
The censor automatically screens it regardless of context or intent.

Hello I am a high schooler and I just joined, I have Aspergers and I feel very triggered when I am exposed to profanity. To me, they are mental grenades thrown in all directions and when I am hit with one, I feel mentally dead and scared. I live with a family that uses them and I go to school and work and hear them. I am just grossed out and sick of hearing what I consider demonic rituals. I have had enough of foul language and I just want to go a day without hearing anything bad. I feel alone, I feel odd that I am a high schooler that hates bad words and it’s why I don’t have many friends. I just want to know if there’s anyone out there who agrees with me and feels down by these gross terms. Please, I have hope that some of you people are out there.

Well one way to see is it is there is probably a lot of frusteration in HS and so maybe some people lash out with swear words cause they are stressed. But at the end of the day swear words are just words.

Idk I can see why you may not like them, but like in life you are going to constantly run into people who say them, I am not doing it here, but for sure I even use swear words when I talk sometimes. LIke I think may be useful not to take it to heart so much. Idk also if you can find a way to stand up to people without swearing that would be cool....like you may just not be the kind of person who uses swear words. But like sometimes people juust use it for empathize or its just how they talk...but like if someone says 'I went surfing and it was f*cking awsome' that is different than if they say 'f*ck you for taking me surfing' but like if you don't like swearing its ok not to do it, but I'd avoid calling people out on it. If anything like true friends would respect you don't use some of those words, but you'd probably be hard pressed to find people to hang out with if you correct their speech. LIke people are much cooler with my friend doesn't swear than my friend doesn't swear and will yell at you if you do.

So idk for sure be true to yourself and if you don't like swearing don't do it, but realize other people may not have the same veiw on it as you and it might not always be a battle worth fighting.

Nope not much for Cursing , but have unfortunately been exposed to it for so long am alittle less stressed about it now .
Kinda hard for me to see it , in normal conversation . And if in person , I think it does what it does, causes a trigger.
Although lower level than before . Often am left to wonder, why people do not substitute regular words . If you wish to converse with someone to share info. ( maybe triggering them is not so effective of a method . ) .?
and by the way , Welcome to Wrong planet.

I have felt the same way about profanity, I detest it when I hear it, but so many people curse, including coworkers that interact with me every day, that my sensitivity level has declined. At most I wince, but then forget about it.

Exposure to cursing will be the cure to sensitivity to cursing. It does not mean you have to curse yourself, I don't. I think curse words are verbal laziness and imply bestial obsession with sexual and excretory functions. That is where the base mind is.

I used to curse a lot as a kid, because the juvenile delinquents I hung out with all thought that it was cool, and I don't think that has changed too much, some things never change.

I know a high ranking woman out at work that curses like a sailor. She thinks that it makes her seem hip, cool, trendy, cute and smart. Maybe it is because some men like to hear an attractive woman curse, because the woman is then talking about words with sexual meanings.

Yes - I was tempted to dump the thread on that basis but several people had replied to the necroing, so...

I don't hate it. But I think swearing should be a spice of language, not a main ingredient. Some people swear excessively from a lack of vocabulary and that grates on my nerves after a while. For some people they have become like hesitation markers, no more meaningful than 'um' or 'ah' and I don't like that either.

Part of my dislike is that I like that some words have more power than others. Swearing to me is powerful and over using swear words diminishes that power. People who know me know that I swear rarely so when I do, it's serious.
