In my case genes are the most probable cause. My father has AS, and my mother has ADD, prosopagnosia and social anxiety (she is not on the spectrum though).

My theory, is a long one.

I think I got autism not as say, a gene. Because neither of my parents nor family tree have it. It was a mutation one could say.

I believe the rise in autism cases is due to the rise of radiation in the world today left over from cold war bomb tests, chernobyl, and even the reactor in Japan I believe it was. Just my theory.

A monkey farted on my neurons when I was a baby.

Inherited from my dad, I think. But neither of us were officially diagnosed.

I don't think I inherited it from anyone, although my family has a long history of mental issues. My sister is bipolar, but that's everyone in my close family. No one else in my family is on the spectrum.

Actually it was almost proven, in the UK anyway that the MMR inject given to children throughout the '90's was causing Autism in some children. I was a normal healthy happy child till I got my MMR and since then all my medical aspects have gotten worse.
Everyone said the MMR was definatly not to blame but funny they changed the ingredients the year after I wa born when the percentage was particularly high!

both my parents have traits, so i got (un)lucky to get that part from both of them.
together with this, my mother was getting treated for cancer while pregnant with me (she's fine now), so that might have had some extra effect as well

Facetious Answer: When Whatever Deity That Is was crafting my generation in Whatever After/Before Life Exists, he decided to add a little variety, so he randomly selected a few yet-to-be-born souls and sprinkled a dash of autism on them. I just happened to be one of those individuals. By this theory, he has also done this with other so-called "mental disorders," just for the sake of maintaining a neurological diversity.

Semi-Facetious Answer: They needed some sort of label to help them understand my peculiarities; Aspergers was the closest fit.

Literal Answer: It's very likely my mother's side of the family; I have a sibling that was diagnosed with HFA (this sibling happens not to share the same father as me; fairly certain it's my mother's side), and many other members from this side of the family exhibit several autistic/Aspergers traits.
I suppose the fact that my mother was two weeks away from turning forty and that my father was a few months away from turning forty-nine might have also been a contributing factor.

I don't really think it's inherited in my case... My mum suspects she might have HFA but I don't really see many of the signs or anything with her. IDK how I got it, but I suppose that doesn't matter; I've always been this way, and I wouldn't want to change it.

I think I got it from my dad's side; a lot of people on his mom's (my grandma), seem to have symptoms. My anxiety and OCD however, come from my mom's side. I might have a little bit of it on my mom's side (she is introverted, but really autistic), but there is little-to-no anxiety on my dad's side, so I got that from my mom.

That's funny, because I have one cat who, compared to my other cats and others I've known, seems so Aspie-ish. I call her my Aspie girl. I wonder if this trait turns up in other animals besides humans, and knowing her I think it does.

I heard that they tested some rats and one started exhibiting aspie-ish behaviours! My dog is obsessed with sticks and whenever she's around other dogs she seems that she's enjoying it but at the same time absolutely clueless! =P Your cat sounds awesome! =)

Supposedly, some monkeys were beginning to develop autistic traits after being vaccinated...
Other animals also have brains that regulate social behavior and sensory issues; it is perfectly reasonable to conclude that said animals can also have alterations in these parts of the brain.
