My son, aged 17, had been asking for ages if he could go for his learner's permit. I bought him the book of questions to learn but he said he couldn't learn them - it was too hard. Instead, he went on the website and did the sample test over and over until he felt he was ready to go. When I took him to do the test, he passed - 98% - much to my shock and horror. I've taken him out a couple of times, to a new housing estate. Roads are all made, roundabouts, street signs etc but no houses so no cars. This was just to get him used to the feel of things. He is now having lessons with a driving instructor and seems to be going OK. Duel controls will give him confidence. He will have quite a few lessons with him before he is ready to go on the road with me.

Why do people in australia have to take a written test for the learners permit. In Seattle we just show proof of enrollment in driver training if under 18. You can get a license at 16 with drivers ed and 18 without it.
