I pronounce it "asperjers" for this very reason (plus I think it sounds better)
I've always done the same. It's moreso when people see it written and pronounce with the "g" sound instead of "j". Fecks me right off. >_<
I've always said it was a "g" sound because it's named after an Austrian person, isn't it? So the word has its roots in central European language. We don't say "iceberj" or "hamburjer".
You are correct, Aietra.
I can never understand people who mispronounce the word. It takes very little effort to find out the correct way to say a word (especially when it is a person's name, and the correct way is the way they themselves pronounce it), rather than arbitrarily substitute sounds like a "j" for a "g" and a "b" for a "p"... and even seemingly inserting an "r" before the first "s".
Just to be inconsistent (as English always is), the verb "asperge" does indeed have a "j" sound, like "surge", unlike the hard "g" in "burger" and "Asperger".
There does seem to be (according to the OED) a slight difference in the U.S. pronunciation - which does sound the first "r", whereas elsewhere that is effectively silent.
PS. I also find it odd that people misspell it as "aspergers", rather than "Asperger's" The former would maybe describe several people, each of whom was using an aspergillum to sprinkle of holy water. The latter is the possessive form of Hans' surname name.
