he may not be trained to do special tasks but he is very calm and he keeps me calm and getting along with people.

so he cant be denied cause of the ada,he will have a license. and so its leagel right? :?:

you failed to include an option for "I do not know", I know too little about service dogs to have an informed point of view. So I will not be voting.

I love my dog. I would be very happy if I could take my dog to work and have it with me all day.

I have a dog and if he could be trained as a service dog, I'm sure he'd be a big help. I've seen a little service dog busy keeping people away from his master in a shopping mall. And he could notice if I drop things (which I do and don't notice) and even pick them up.

Does anybody know what skills a service dog for Asperger's would have to learn?

Part of the ADA definition for a Service Dog includes that it is individually trained to perform some services for a disabled person. While businesses are not allowed to ask a person about their disability they are allowed to ask what your service dog does for you. You need to have a good answer for that.

The stock answer that my Aspie son gives to explain his service dog is, "She calms me down and helps me focus." This is usually sufficient but sometimes people want a more specific answer and frankly I think that they deserve one.

The specific commands that my Son's dog has been taught to help him are:

LAP- In response she gets up on his lap (either half-way up or all the way up as needed). This gives him the deep pressure that he sometimes needs to calm down or come out of a meltdown.

CLOSER- In response she crawls behind him and come up in a sitting position between his legs. This works when he is sitting in a chair or standing with his back against a wall. The warm pressure on his legs and the proximity of her head (for petting) reduce his stress and allow him to interact socially with more grace and polish.

Alert- She also looks out for some specific problematic behaviors (I won't elaborate) and interrupts them before they can become a problem.

I also am an Aspie and I look forward to getting a dog of my own soon. I plan to train for similar commands.

Good luck with your service dog. I hope it works as well for you as it has for my son.
