Confused and could do with a little guidance.
Hey all, I'm kinda new around here. When I was 14 I got diagnosed with adhd and aspergers syndrome. Went through school fine, was a bit of a troublemaker. When I got to sixth form I came off risperdal (antipsychotics) and developed mood swings, and general irritation etc... So went to doctors, they diagnosed me with bipolar disorder, then a few weeks later adhd aswell. So they put me on lithium and concerta, and quetiapine. I got worse and worse, became more depressed, and lost touch with reality. A few months go by and I go to see a new doctor who put me on antidepressants, and it's doing me great. However I still don't know what's wrong with me. I think I'm an aspie, I do have a social life, but I'd rather go to the pub or somewhere quiet rather than a club or a party. I'm not shy or anything, I have a few odd quirks about me, have this problem with sniffing, I think it's a tick, well yeah it must be. I get upset quite easily and take things to much offence, I don't know, I really don't know what to do anymore, I guess I'm happy but this ? over my diagnoses just bothers me :S
It sounds like you've been through a lot. You'll find that many other people here, myself included, have gone through a diagnostic circle or two before arriving at AS. Tony Atwood, in his books about AS, talks about people collecting a "charm bracelet of diagnoses" before finally getting to AS.
I was diagnosed with AS around age 40, and previously had been diagnosed with TLE, and tentatively diagnosed with things related to schizophrenia all the way back to high school. I'd been put on Risperdol, Abilify, and Neurontin to no useful effect, but now am on Klonopin for seizures and sensory issues.
As long as you've settled into a good routine with docs and medication, you're in good situation, whether or not you're an Aspie.
