From what I understand PDD-NOS is atypical autism. The diagnosis is given when autism is clearly present but does not fit the exact criteria for Kanner's or Asperger's or any other autistic spectrum disorder. I used to misunderstand it as a milder form of Asperger's or Kanner's but have since learned from reading this site that this is not necessarily so. I personally believe my brain has the autistic wiring but in some of the criteria such as behaviors I am only mildly affected. So I could be PDD-NOS. But back to the OP's question, I would think stating that you had mild autism would be more correct. I don't particularly like the term PDD-NOS, it's clunky.

Yeah, I don't think telling people you have a Puddin' Nose is going to enlighten them any more than telling them you have Ass Burgers. You will rarely run across anyone who has the slightest clue what either one is. Most folks at least recognize the word Autism, even though they have no idea what it is and are under the impression its just a variation of Downs Syndrome retardation. If you bring it up, be sure you have well structured notes, you're going to have a lot of 'splaining to do...

Defiitely clunky. Honestly, there's lots of people who would be equally confused by Asperger's. So, if you aren't going to use the term you were diagnosed with, I'd just stick with "mild autism", as you'll end up using that term anyway most of the time.

Or, you could just tell them you have slight autism.
