I suppose in this day and age you'd called them keyboard-pals, but the idea remains the same. Is it really worth it, when I can just go on forums like this?

The idea behind a pen-pal is that you write each other and get to know each other better. A forum like this is great, bug more for general discussion with multiple people. Unless you go PM people, but then you are effectively pen-palling.

Yes they are because in the case of sharing sensitive information and personal messages with your pen pals. I'm sure your pal would appreciate the discretion.

It can be fun. I've done it. It's nice to confide in someone you trust and not have to worry about friends and rumors...but that's mainly if you are in high school. If people are spreading rumors after high school, they need a kick in the crotch.
