I guess I had inflated expectations about this day--that I'd go to a bar somewhere and have 21 shots and get smashed with friends and on and on. It's not safe and not fun, but here's the thing--I don't even have the friend base to do that with. None of my acquaintainces in college even know today's my birthday. My family back home has sent me texts and voicemails wishing me a happy birthday, but I am ignoring them. They are all asking me about buying alcohol. Truth is, that's the last thing on my mind.

So I've spent a large portion of today in bed. I can't really afford to, but I'm just so depressed. My elders tell me that life goes downhill from here. If this is the high point of my life, what do I have to live for?

Fortunately, it is not ... and yet it is, for now you know that was all just a bunch of empty hype!

Learning still more!

Happy 21.

My life didn't start getting any fun until my mid-twenties, but it seems to be getting easier the older I get. Hang on in there.

Get better elders., to start with. Yours are no good.

Get off the bed in the evening and walk in a park for half an hour. Then go buy yourself a beer (or several) and drink it at home while watching an episode of Chuck (or three).

It's not so bad.

When someone says <age> is the prime of your life, take it with a grain of salt. It is illogical to say so because not everyone enjoys the same age. I hated my time as a kid and started liking things more when i got into middle school but I still had a crummy time then and in high school. Some people may like childhood or adolecence the best because they had the most fun then. Some say they like adulthood best. It is ENTIRELY (or mostly I guess) your call when YOU have the prime of your life. Me, I'd say that there is no prime, only ups and downs and times you enjoy more than others. Turning 21 is pretty funny to imagine as the prime of your life since you're ONLY 21 and you aren't about to die or are even at middle age. And why must people obsess over alcohol when it kills brain cells and affects your brain power, something everyone needs but many don't have even when sober. -Power Girl

I don't cry on my birthday anymore. That's real progress. It was all about not having anyone to share it with.

Well, from one puppy to another, Happy Birthday!! If I were closer I'd get you a nice juicy bone. 8)

And in no way does life peak at 21. My life is infinitely better at 31 than at 21.

I'm 27. 18 and 21 birthdays were not nice for me. My life is on the up at the moment. As a previous poster said, life is all ups and downs, sometimes things aren't great and sometimes they are really spectacular. Realise that your elders are probably talking about their own experience and have no idea how their words have effected you.

I know from experience how much it sucks to have to spend your birthday alone. I have a feeling this is somewhat common among aspies. It's best just to let the day be and tomorrow it will be over and just another day. Is there anything you like that you can do for yourself, like order pizza to be delivered or go see a movie?

Thanks, guys. I honestly feel better now. Birthdays always suck for me, but hey, tomorrow's a new day. That's what I have to always tell myself.

Most birthdays are bad, I find. The thing about birthdays (and holidays, really) is that you always think you should have more fun than you are having. It's really a matter of perspective, I guess.

Yes, yes, yes! 59 years have taught me to lower the expectations and avoid disappointment!
