Does a person's name affect his/her personality? I'm not looking for answers that have to do with any kind of mystical concept. I'm looking for real, scientific answers.
Do not post your name here. It is personal information.

Yes, it does.

Observe.

I really don't know maybe. I have had a foreign name my whole life, so I think I think its kind of a cruel coincidence that I act strange/off as well. I think some people actually think I am a foreigner.

But when I was growing up I didn't know anything about AS or even OCD or ADD, so I probably thought I was just cursed, and the whole Jewish thing.

Now I now those AS/possible OCD/ADD and being Jewish probably had nothing to do with me not having any friends being a loner and being different. But when I was younger...I didnt know that

i have read in decades past, about studies which demonstrated links between a person's birthname and their later mood in life. i just can't find 'em on the web.
i can say that i felt hobbled by my own name for decades. i feel certain that if my parents had given me a different name i would have turned out differently. "christopher" was the name i always wanted.

My name, which is John , is so common that giving it out means nothing. Given that this is a common name, and that I am not a common person, your name probably does not affect your personality very much.

Posting your name online isn't safe.

Posting your FULL name online isn't safe. There are about 5 million people named John in the United States. It would be impossible to find me just out of all the people named John in Michigan. In fact, finding me out of all the people named John Perry (My full name) would be impossible, and my full name is in my profile anyway. People are way too paranoid about things like this.

Wouldn't you think it kind of defeats the purpose of this thread if no one could post their names?

Dalton to me sounds like a weird, almost hammy sort of name. I guess that's somewhat like me.

Sometimes people's names can match their personality. I was friends with this gay guy at school called courtney, he has a girl's name that suits his girly personality, it's almost as if his parents knew when they named him.

(Of course it's safe to post your name, especially if you have a common name. My name is very common, Sophie. I don't think many people could track me down, so Sophie Sophie Sophie Sophie.)

Posting your full name online can be risky, but posting your first name isn't too bad.

Anyway, I am often surprised by how people's names match their personalities. I think we all have an idea of what names suit what people, too. So, yes, names and personality are linked.

I have a traditional masculine name that has a non-traditional spelling. I, myself, am pretty non-traditional, so I suppose there could be some correlation between my name and my personality.

I don't think so. My dad says he knows someone with the same name as a friend of mine, and says she is quite a bit different than my friend.

I don't see a personality in a name, however a see a "look". It's usually just comes from knowing someone with that name. For example, there is a guy in my favourite band named Murray, now I picture all Murrays like that.

Getting back to personality, I haven't met very many people with my name as it is kind of uncommon, so I can' say anything about that, but I have met people that have the same name as each other, and I can't see a personality correlation.

Christopher is from the Greek for "bearer of Christ" after the story that a saint carried the young Jesus across a river. Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. Many people carry medals depicting this legend for good luck. In 1969 the Vatican decided that story was made up and took away Saint Christopher's feast day. Of course it had to be made up. Baby Jesus didn't need anyone to carry Him across the river. He could crawl on water!

btw, that last bit is an original joke by The Bicycling Guitarist (although the Catholic stuff is true history). Share if you dare, but give credit where due, or due due as the case may be.

My birth name is Christopher, but I go by Chris. Frequently however when asked my name I introduce myself as "The Bicycling Guitarist" or TBG (pronounced teebeegee) for short as I see that as my true identity. Of course in mythic tales one isn't supposed to give one's true name to others as it can give them power over you. I'm not worried because that isn't my true name but only the one for this manifestation. I have requested and it has been arranged that "The Bicycling Guitarist" will be on my grave marker, so that nickname is literally carved in stone!

I think it depends on the person. I hate my legal name, simply because it reminds me of everything that has happened during my school years (mainly the bullying and harrassment).

I'm Chinese with a French name and I've grown up in English speaking countries (and have no particular accent) and I've never been part of the popular crowd. Perhaps it's caused me to feel like an outsider...or I could always attribute it to my condition and social awkwardness *shrug*.
