I hate it when people cut in lines (be it lunch lines, shopping lines, or elsewhere). Here's why:
Someone at the back of that line is waiting like they're supposed to. Call them X. The line looks like this:
A, B, C, X.
After a few minutes, someone cuts in:
A, B, C, D, X
After a few more minutes, A leaves the line (has his lunch/purchase/whatever), but here comes another cutter!
B, C, D, X
And again:
B, E, C, D, X
Then:
E, C, D, X
Has X gotten any closer to the front, even though he/she's been there before two of the others in line? Nope, X is still last and in the position he/she started in (four back) even after two others have checked out.
See, you think that you're all going to get there eventually, but the fact of the matter is that the person at the end of the line - X - is going to have to wait longer than everyone else, even though X is following the rules. Everyone you cut in front of has to wait longer because you're not following the rules and are being selfish. I know lines are annoying and long, but common manners says you get at the back of the line and wait your turn like everyone else.
