I've been reading about AS for the last couple months and I'm pretty sure I have it. I'm actually at peace with this discovery but I haven't figured out how to talk to my parents about this. I'm kind of afraid they won't believe me, and I have a tendency to become mute when confronted by them.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to "come out", so to speak?

I just did this with my Mom and my boyfriend... I took this approach and it seemed to work.

ME: "You know how I never really know when to shut up?"
MOM/BOYFRIEND: "Yeah..."

ME: "You know how I am always the last one to get the joke and take people too literally?"
MOM/BOYFRIEND: "Yeah..."

ME: "You know how I can get on a subject or topic or project and obsess about it until it's done?"
MOM/BOYFRIEND: "Yeah..."

ME: "You know how I can't stand to wear wool and get really freaked out and upset by seemingly little things like loud noises and when I have a wrinkle in my sheets, but somehow I managed to break my kneecap last year and not really notice until six months later it had healed funny?"
MOM/BOYFRIEND: "Yeah..."

ME: "You know how I am always falling in with liars and getting duped by people who want to steal from me or use me, because I always take them at their word?"
MOM/BOYFRIEND: "Yeah..."

ME: "Well those things and a bunch of other ways I act and react are all symptoms of this thing called Asperger's Syndrome. Do you know what that is?
MOM/BOYFRIEND: "Not really."

ME: "Well, I'll forward you some links and if you have time, I'd love to know what you think about all that."
MOM/BOYFRIEND: "Okay."

Done. And done.

Hope that helps!

:P My folks were relieved to know that my oddness was not the result of bad parenting on their part.

Yeah, mine too! I hate it how some people here have folks who deny their own child's dx... mine embrace it, and believe it. At least they know. Of course, I haven't been DX'd yet.

I was in the same position a few months ago. I just wrote them a letter, left it on their bed.

Well, my mom told me, so I didn't have to worry about it, but I'd just give her a paper on it or something.

Yeah, my mother told me too. I actually think it really wouldn't be necessary to tell them though.
