I took a shot at taking driving lessons about a year ago. I was a "good driver", however, I didn't quite make it to the "state road test". I'm pretty sure my disability (AS) kept me from passing the test.

(As some of you might already know, AS can sometimes contribute to poor concentration and/or motor skills...)

One of the reasons that I didn't pass was because missed some "stop" signs because I was concentrating too much on what other drivers were doing, instead.

I plan on taking more lessons in the future to improve my skills so that someday, eventually, I will be able to pass the test.

Public transportation really "isn't my thing" because it can be a pain to use and can be pretty expensive! :x

What are your experiences?

I passed on the first try but I shouldn't have; to this day, I don't know why that guy passed me! However I did not learn till I was in my 20s, in a state where most kids were driving at 16.

It's not unusual for a LOT of teenagers around to fail miserably the first few times when it comes to driving. It's not a skill that comes naturally to everyone. :) I'm a racer by nature, I automatically dive for the apex of every corner and learned to drive manual very quickly. I really, REALLY push the envelope nowadays and know every inch of my car...I've only been driving for 18 months! Not everyone else is so lucky though, and learning to drive can be a challenge.

All about practise :) If you can control a car well, then you're doing well. If you can concentrate on everything that's happening around you, you're doing well. If you can do BOTH at the SAME TIME...that's a feat to be proud of :D

I have poor depth perception due to problems with my eyes that would make driving difficult, so I have not yet learned.

I took two driving lessons, and that was more than enough! For me, it was a combination of my OCD and Asperger's that inhibited my success. I was pretty much doomed from the start: fear of killing people, inability to understand clockwise from counterclockwise, and poor directional/measurement skills...

Well, learning to drive was like learning how to use a computer for the first time, it takes some adjusting. I was very nervous while performing the driving test... hmm I actually failed it 2 times. :(

But I did ace the theoretical test. I love to drive fast cars and breaking the law! :D

I don't have my license because I can't be bothered to get it.

That didn't stop me from driving my best mates car at 3am at 140km/h

I have a Black Peugeot 206 waiting for me.

I have nystagmus which renders me unable to drive due to my poor vision.

No problems driving here. (I LOVE car rides and being able to drive allows for more opportunities for those.) I also drive extended-length vans and mini buses for my job - up to 24-passenger size (half the length of a regular bus). I especially like the challenge of navigating bigger vehicles in crowded surroundings, like when there's a festival going on and there's people and vehicles everywhere. (Last time I had a van and I remember saying "That was no fun! I want a bus next time.")

Everyone without a vehicle...Ima teach you in this :D *points at avatar*

Conformadore...that's quite a feat  I got copped by a speed camera at 147km/h and paid a HUGE fine (joke is I'd seen it and slammed on the brakes before it got me 8O)...but I think having no license in your case tops my one episode of going completely NUTS

What was the speed limit? 100?

Supposedly (around here at least) those cameras aren't supposed to be able to catch you if you're going that fast - the camera can't get a proper pic of your license plate. I think the fastest my husband's gone through one was 135 km/h - in this case though they weren't looking for speed, it was a photo for entering a toll highway. I don't actually remember if the camera got us that time...
