Has anybody here ever been to CAMHS to get help for anything? And what was your experience like? I'm just wondering because I'll be seeing CAMHS soon for self-harm/some eating issues/suicidal thoughts and attempts. So not really asperger's though they're the ones who diagnosed me years ago. But whatever you went for, what was your experience, and did they help you?

Thank you :)

I've been in therapy provided by CAHMS for around 4 years now... I've had three different therapists (two clinical psychologists, my current psychiatrist).

And kinda. It depends who you have and if they're a good fit for you and if you're prepared to be proactive and tackle your issues, not the organisation itself IMO. When I first went with self injury, mood and eating issues, their response was "it's perfectly normal, bye" [not exact words] So I wasn't very happy with that. There was a LONG wait between the consultations and actually scheduling regular appointments, too.

My first therapist [clinical psychologist] was useless - nice guy, but very bad at what he did, would go off topic a lot, was disorganised, and seemed scared of what he was doing. He was only newly qualified.
Second therapist [another clinical psychologist] was amazing, but she seemed to worship 'The Manuals' so only ever went by the book. Helped me a lot nevertheless.
My current psychiatrist is amazing. Didn't like him at first and he pisses me off at times, but he's very honest and changelling, which is what I need. I've made a lot of progress. He seems to love his job.

They helped me somewhat, though it took a while. I can't remember when I first went so I don't know if there was a particular reason that sparked the need for it, but I hope things go well for yourself :)

I'm glad that they do help, thank you both for your answers :) I already agree that their organisation seems pretty terrible, though! Honestly I'm not even sure if I will see them for that long, as I really am pretty normal at the moment and finding balance generally! Kind of excitable too!! Honestly I don't think I need or should get help, because even though suicidal thoughts/self-harm and everything tends to be reoccuring, everything's going pretty well at the moment. I'll be seeing them next week though.
