How do your Special Interests work?!

Basically since joining WP a few weeks ago I have heard so many different takes on peoples interests and how they work. In general I have always had an interest which slowly fades and another takes it's place, I used to have short, as in a few months at most, long gaps between them but haven't for years. At the moment I'm going through something very strange, I've had an interest for almost three years and I have always often got lapses during an interest when I spend up to three weeks fixating on that thing before going back to my long term interest. About a week ago I had a lapse where I didn't have anything covering it, I also don't feel I'm ready to move on yet so know it wasn't a gap. At the same time I was thinking could I possibly be fourcing myself to stay on since I have so much to do with this subject in my life now and because it isnt closed enough?
Anyway any thoughts on that would really, really help me quit worrying for the weekend!
Also how long do people's interests/lapses in them last and what sort of things do you have interests in, have you ever noticed a theme? For example I have noticed all my characters in interests are strong-willed females.

Mine works by:

One that is there is strong for however long as the time length depends!
Starts to fade
a moment of blankness
think or see or hear etc about something else!
Learn about it
it is strong,I know about it alot etc

Its an annoying cycle and I wish I could just pick one. Sometimes I obsess over something I loved a week-5 years ago. I call these: "My main" ones!! ! XD

My special interests are long - lasting (I have the current one for five years). If they change, it tends to look like finding a new interesting topic, having two special interest for several months, and then the previous one disappears.
