I found this out tonight and wanted to share the info because it's not very well known. My 16yo dyes her hair lots of colors and changes them often. She uses Splat, Manic Panic, Feria, etc. Tonight she wanted to bleach the bright red out and go blonde and the bleach did nothing. Didn't even fade it a little, just bleached out the inch or so of root.
That's because it's not a regular hair color, some are now using direct dyes. Bleach won't take it out, and stripping it can make your hair brittle or just fall out. There are ways to remove the color, but it takes longer - like a couple of days. The easiest and gentlest way is the way we are now doing. A series of hot oil treatments. Wash your hair, put in enough warm olive oil to coat it and then wrap in a towel for an hour and wash it out. Wash it well to get all the oil out. The oil will remove a bit of the color each time. You will need to repeat this several time, maybe many, to get these types of dyes out.
Just in case anybody here has dyed their hair bright orange and now needs to go back to their normal color before school starts, you need to start removing it now. It can take days.
Wish we knew this earlier.
