Question to you youngins':
My niece is 14 years old, beautiful, intelligent, well-dressed, neurotypical but shy. Her 8th grade class is having a semi-formal. This boy in her class who is a cancer survivor asked her to be his date. She didn't expect it so she just blurted "yes". Later on the same day, she overheard him say that she was SO stupid to think that he would take "her" to that dance. She wasn't hurt by it. She doesn't even like him - she said he looks like a monkey. The thing that did hurt her was why did he pick her to do that to? She doesn't even bother with him. She decided not to go at all even though she has two female friends to go with. She thinks there will probably be more humiliations waiting for at at the actual dance. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm asking you guys because I have no idea. :?

Aww. :( I respect that your niece wasn't upset, though. "He looks like a monkey" LOL. I don't have much personal experience regarding the situation (I'm 15 and shy too) but your niece definetly needs to know that her victimization had nothing to do with HER. There's nothing wrong with her that would cause her to be bullied. It's the boy's problem that lead to him doing what he did, not her's. It totally sucks that this ruined her semi-formal though. I'd be reluctant to go too.

If I were her I wouldn't go either. But I would also confront the boy and ask him if he was serious, because otherwise don't waste my time.
